Not E-Approved = Not Legal?

    I'm Looking at replacing my side indicators with dark/black ones. Bulb will still be amber.

    I have found some "smoked" ones that are E-Approved and some black ones that are not.

    Ideally I would go for the black ones but i will avoid them if they are not legal.

    Can anyone confirm this?

    Yeh not E marked means they are not legal for road use and should only be used on show cars that are not driven on public roads.

    Smoked ones would look better anyway.

    Are you sure that the E mark is being used for anything other than Tyres in this country yet?? I would buy a DOT/E marked product over a non branded one, but other than tyres i dont think it actually matters here yet

    As far as I know we were always supposed to have only E marked tyres here its just that it was never enforced until recently.

    My cousin built a show car civic years ago and done some research into it and found that any parts he bought needed to be E marked to be fully legal.

    But still I wouldn't be 100% certain and I highly doubt its actually enforced (apart from the tyres)

    The EU directive 72/245/EEC which states that all electronic and vehicle electronic devices must be E-marked was transposed into Irish law using the European Communities (Passenger Car Entry into Service) Regulations 2003.

    This was ammended in 2005 and 2007 to make it more comprehensive for exhaust noise and tint levels on windows etc but since 2003 any headlamps etc must be E marked.

    That said id be suprised if 1% of Gardai would even be aware of this

    If you order them on the internet, there should be a small text beside the pictures where it says, Road legal or Only for off road use. I've bought new clear side repeaters and amber bulbs for my 156(as opposed to the orange repeaters..ugh), and tbh it didn't even pass through my head that they need to be E marked.

    Ya because they dont have to have a European certification to sell in Japan.

    Thats why they dont sell certain model cars in Europe, Take the Integra Type R DC2, They had the UKDM, CDM,USDM and as far as im aware there was an Australian model too, this was because certain restrictions such as emmissions were stricter outside Japan, UKDM models have a fog light, JDM do not.

    Theres loads of examples of this across the board.

    Should be somewhere along the side wall of the tyre I think.

    My point is that if they demanded e marks for glass and lights it would have major inplications for owners of jdm cars

    Its only valid for items produced and sold within the EU.. When you get your glass replaced by Autoglass on a JDM car, its E-marked.

    I don't know if you know where I'm going here, but for example, I have owned a number of Mitsubishi FTOs. If E Certification for lights was required, there would be no way it'd pass.
    How would you get lights for an FTO with an E mark?

    Im not aware if the FTO was actually manufacturered for the EU, i think it wasnt but, lets just say it was for the Japanese Domestic Market only. When you go to get a new headlamp from Mitsubishi, they will import the part from Japan so it wont need an E-Mark.

    If however there was a UK domestic Market one, it would have an E-Mark

    It was only sold new in japan. Ralliart sold them in the UK using SVA.
    No e marks.

    Some eu countries l0ok for e marks on lights regardless of where it was made.

    Will check it for you, I know of one guy who tried to register an FTO in another European country (I think it was Holland or Switzerland, not 100% sure) and they wanted E marks on glass and lights.
