It's easy to edit the video so that they all seem stupid.. I bet it was only a tiny percentage that gave such stupid answers

Another America bashing thread. We need to go around some of the Universitys in Ireland and ask the same questions. Or better yet ask about American states and their capitals.

Seriously? Have you ever heard some of the answers from Larry Gogans Just A Minute Quiz? I'll give you one:

Q White smoke is a sign that a new what has been elected?
    A Ummmm, an indian chief?

Stupid people. Every country has them.

While you're there give Chuck Feeney a shout, tell him we think all Americans are stupid and we don't want their money and that we'll start repaying the $1 billion he's invested in Irish eduction back asap. :pac:

    True but it's still hilarious.

I'm not surprised though. Not just because 'all Americans are stupid', more because I think it's expected in a country with such a large population.
There is enough going on within the country that most people just don't listen to what happens outside.

WTF? Why would people know the answer to this question? It even took me a sec to get it, and the only reason I know it is because a new pope has been elected in the last few years, and I just happened to be watching the news at the time.

Just because some people don't know the answer to a question that you know, doesn't make them stupid.

    They're ignorant rather than stupid.

Ignorant is a better term but my point still stands. Most people over 20 will know the answer to that question, they were around for one election and will have heard stories in school, off parents and grandparents or even seen it on tv. I was wrong to label the ones that dont know it as stupid but it is also wrong to label all Americans as stupid due to the contents of that video for the same reasons.

you could ask the same questions on the streets of Dublin and get the same answers tbh

Larry Gogan has had some classics over the years.

LARRY: Name of a bird with a long neck?

    CALLER: Eh...Naomi Campbell.

LARRY: Name of a dangerous race?

    CALLER: The Arabs

It's very easy to interview many people, edit out all the normal and smart answers and make a country look like a bunch of retards, not an accurate representation at all.

There are quite a few places in Ireland that if you took a camera crew and asked similar questions, you would get answers just as cringeworthy, if not even more so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,184 ✭✭✭KINGVictor

I have seen that video lots of time. It shows the effect of lack of interest in common basic general knowledge.
It is quite unfortunate to listen to some of those answers ( at a point I thought it was all made up), but you can just see the cluelessness in the eyes of the respondents.

However, it will be even be more extraordinarily stupid to believe that video represents the majority of Americans.

Tbh, ask any European the capital of Vermont or which state Mt. Richmond is in and they wouldn't have a clue

Not really the same though. If the people in the video what the capital of Bavaria was then it might be comparable.

I'm pretty sure if we went to DKIT or UL and asked similar questions about North America we'd get quite interesting answers :)

They were asked several questions about their own nation in that clip too.

Cherry-picking stupid people and their ignorant answers is very easily done. Throw enough shit and some of it will stick. I'm sure you could also have made a video of all the people who answered these admittedly easy questions correctly.

However, due to the nature of the US, it's domination of media and politics, how it's news corporations only focus on internal issues or issues that directly affect the US, it's not surprising that a lot of American people don't know much about the world. I have cousins who live in Seattle. They've only been there 20 years. But the level of ignorance to world issues is quite staggering. It's not their fault. They're Fox News viewers. However, I wouldn't paint all Americans with the same brush.

They've somehow devised a school curriculum that leaves out geography, religion, civics, home economics and all our mainstays and yet allows them to be the leaders in innovating in science and technology and being the leading industrial nation in the world.

Lazy stereotyping of Americans.Far too many people on this side of the atlantic are content to believe that most people in the USA are like this.
I have met plenty of Americans who are knowledgeable about events beyond their shores.

While true I doubt it was that tiny simply due to the unbelievably ignorant **** I've heard from so many Americans at this stage its staggering.

Anyway the video is ancient but you could honestly make a long running tv series out of the same sketch.

I remember once there was a thread about testing 'dumb Americans'. As a response to someone saying only 1/40 Americans are like that the thread people using the chat website , think it was omegle and asked Americans what year 9/11 happened to see how many knew and the results were actually pretty worryingly shocking. It actually started to stop being funny , pretty crazy.
