Where to find out about inservices?

May seem like a stupid question but where can I find out about inservices? I am looking in particular for English ones as I am teaching Senior English for the first time in years. We don't really seem to get notice of them in our school except the odd new teacher gets sent on them. I am prepared to go to ones in my own time but would also try and get permission to go to one if it fell in school hours.
    Thanks in advance
    T

    Hi

I'm in the same situation kind of.

I never get to go on the inservices in the school as I'm either not teaching English or someone more senior gets to go instead.

Are you part of the teacher's association for English?

If not, join. You will hear things that way. Google INOTE and you should find them.

    Hi,

if you join your subject association, you will be put on their email list and will be directly notified of any upcoming in-service day(s). This way, you will always know of courses before they are put up on the notice board in the staffroom.

You should also check with your local Education Centre. They are always interested in knowing what type of courses teachers would like to attend.
You could, for example, request a course with an experienced DES Examiner to go over the 2010 Leaving Cert marking scheme.

Inservices tend to be available when a course is new and seeing as that is not the case in English, I haven't noticed any advertised lately. The Dept is under serious financial pressure, so unless the subject association is running one I don't fancy your chances of finding one. Unless it's been 10 years since you taught the course last, it's the same, just with different texts.

Try the teaching support service here. If you ring your local education service, they might know of any upcoming inservice.

subject associations generally dont have affiliation to official dept inservices but rather have their own night courses.
Also all teachers of the certain subject should be allowed go to official inservices.

The JCSP service usually send out a poster of inservices for the term ahead.

The SLSS is soon to be no more so they won't be doing any inservices I'd imagine

The SLSS is merely changing its name....

Really? Because I heard from one of their employees that it is all gone and that it is a funding issue.

not at all, its changing to the PDST which is basically all the supports in together. I presume it will be cheaper and more efficient but its still there. Any work I am involved in with them is merely moving to another name.
