Is it possible to get scrappage against a new 2011 car?

    hi

I have a scrappage eligible car and i'm thinking of a new car for next year. The dealer tells me I can't order a 2011 car and get scrappage as the scheme is unlikely to be renewed at the end of the year. Is this correct?

It's the wrong time of the year for a new car so i'd prefer to wait for january.

    thanks

It's correct at the moment. It depends if the gov't extend the scheme. If there's one in stock, buy it - bird in the hand and all that...

    I would risk it.

If you buy now you obviously get a 10 reg. If you risk it an its not extended, I would be pretty sure that you could buy a 10 reg next year for similar money as buying it new under scrappage scheme now.
If it is extended, well you are certainly winningby waiting

In the car trade now myself (not an owner, just a worker), this is the most common obsticle these days selling 2010 cars, will I or won't I wait until next year? The brand I sell are going balls-out on discounting their cars along with Government scrappage to sell as many as they can before the scheme ends (and it is ending make no mistake). You will lose out on Government scrappage and Manufacturer contribution if you wait till next year. As the above poster said, if the car is in stock,or nearly due,go for it. You're still getting a super deal. Remember, the last scrappage scheme was in 1997 !!

There's a few months waiting list on a lot of the scrappage deal new cars (well there was anyway) so if you ordered in November you probably wont get the car before January anyhow. Win-win!

In order to qualify for the Government Scrappage scheme the new car must be registered by 31/12/10 afaik.

Didn't know that but what if you ordered a new car in Nov / Dec under the scheme? Are the garage gonna refuse the sale? Hardly!

The garage won't refuse the sale, but the revenue will refuse the VRT discount. Can't see any garage taking that hit these days.

It needs to be registered before 31/12/10 for the scheme to exist so of course they're going to refuse a sale that costs them 1500 quid in VRT.

anyone remember what happened last time with ordered cars that arrived after the scheme offically finnished?
i'm guessing they might let it run for first 3 months of 2011.

The industry will be lobbying hard for it but nobody knows for sure if it will happen. It just about scraped through the last time as the greens were against it.

Nothing announced since, you're unlikely to hear anything until the budget is announced.

Thanks everyone. I'm probably going to get myself a decent 2nd hand rather than a new car now.

Wait till 2011 and buy a 2010 car, the price drop on a one year old car will be more that any scrappage deal.

Sensible approach tbh. Youll probably save more by buying a decent 2 year old car compared to buying the same car new with the scrapage scheme.

I would prefer the scrappage tbh. Good year old cars are making good money. My brother got a new avensis the other day for 22.5k. Its a diesel luna model. I thought it was a cheap car..

I have heard from a pretty reliable source that the scheme will not be extended, really hopeful not though!

Is the scheme making a guaranteed profit for the government? As well as keeping quite a few people in work, that is!
