    hi
does anyone know what is the best .22lr bullet or kind of bullet for rabbit hunting with a suppressor eg subsonic hollow points:confused:
sick of under powered bullets not havin enough punch, accuracy and range:mad::mad::mad: I know i can go supersonic but as anyone with hunting experence will know that the supersonic "crack" cant be suppressed wih a .22 round effectively which will send those bunnys running!!!!

also thinkin of buyin a tika 5.6x55 with a suppressor:D for deer and foxes. I use a .22lr (cz452) for the bunnys but i am thinking of geting something bigger to deal with foxes and deer, i know manny people who go deer culling and hunting and would like to join in as i enjoy huntin but i am unsure about more hi calibred rifles. i live near kinscourt co cavan.

all thoughts and comments are wecome!!!! thanks

Hollow point subsonic .22lr rounds are your best bet. Most popular brands would be Eley and Winchester. I used Eley and they worked well. Winchesters didn't group so good in my rifle. People say Winchester subsonic rounds kill better, possibly due to a larger hollow point (I forget). My advice, buy a few boxes of different hollow point subsonic brands and see how well they group in your rifle, then use the one which is most accurate.

When the rifle is moderated, subsonic rounds are extremely quiet to fire. However, there is an audible thump when the round hits the rabbit. This will put nearby rabbits on alert and send a few home if they were real close. Personally I never had time for high velocity .22lr rounds.

So you must group different bullets first, that's how to find out which brand suits your rifle best. Take your time, do everything the same way each time, rifle, head position, trigger squeeze, rest, all the same each time. Shoot within reasonable ranges for the weather conditions too.

Can't advise on the 6.5x55 as I don't use one.

6.5x55 are a fine rond on fallow sized game.
I had one for many years and she served me well.

The ammo can be pricey though.
My Fav ammo was Norma Nosler 120grain ballistic Tipped.

    Although it was expensive ammo.

For a deer and fox gun, try a .243, .25-06 or .270, with the latter two being my preferences, as they've got a bit more poke on bigger deer. All are much, much flatter shooting than a 6.5x55, and if you're going to shoot foxes at night, that does take some of the focus off accurate range estimation, which is extremely difficult at night. With either the .25-06 or the .270 you could hold dead on the shoulder all the way out to about 240 yards, and if you're taking many shots longer than that at night I'd be very surprised.

I have both the 6.5 and a .25-06, i use the norma 120 grain in the 6.5 the best round i have used in the 6.5.

Its my first season using the .25-06 and its a brilliant round, ive been using 85 grain federal ballistic tips they are a super round.

What i like about the .25-06 is that its flat as a pancake you see the animal taking the shot.

The 6.5 will be getting left in the cabinet.

I would definatley recomend the .25-06 for deer and you can also use it for foxs aswell.

I have a .308 running on 125grain HPS ammo, flat shooting and hard hitting.
Has proved well capable of head shots on vermin out well past 200 yards to date

Not as flat cheap as the .25-06; but cheaper to run as practice ammo is dirt cheap and hunting ammo is cheaper that the .25-06 and if you want to go on the continent in the future to shoot boar .308 can be tuned in with heavy hard hitting 168 or 175 grain ammo for boar.

    just my 2 cents.

I only use 22 lr subsonics on rabbits out to 120 yards no issues. Why do you need any bigger?? As for the rifle .243 seems to be the ideal for deer and fox

Does a .22 magnum need a suppressor and what advantages besides longer range is there for it over standard .22 normal rounds and subs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,907 ✭✭✭✭CJhaughey

.22 mag is supersonic so it won't work as well as a .22lr Sub in a mod.
I don't really see the point of the .22WMR . I had a CZ chambered for it but the cost of the ammo compared with long rifle is substantial.
I suppose for Foxes and the like it would be better than .22lr as it develops around twice the muzzle energy as a .22lr but not as good as a hornet or.223
It kind of falls between two stools as far as I am concerned, better to use a .17HMR in my view or go to a centrefire .22

I see your point, but on ammo -

If .22 magnum is twice the price of .22lr and magnum ammo is half the price or even less than .223.

.223 no good for small game if you want to eat it where .22 magnum could be used for small game and still be able to eat it?

All Bunnies can be eaten after a .223 if you head shoot them

.223 ammo from €10 for 20 cheapest price

    €20 for 50 rounds of .22mag

Very little in price difference, Big difference in capabilities

    .223 cheapest 12.00 euro for 20 = .60 cents per round A.E.

    .22wmr 13.00 euro for 50 = .26 cents per round

Quite a bit of a price difference less than half the price.

    +1

I think the OP needs to spend some time at the range. It may be that shots aren't hitting vital areas because as cavan shooter says, the .22 is good out to 120 yards at least on bunnies.

Spend a bit of time with different ammo and a couple of targets at different ranges, learn to read the wind and all should be well.

    If you ever used a .223 you'd never bother with a .22mag

    9/10 foxes prefer them
Saying that, I use ammo €115 for 100= €1.15 a round, I understand a student or similar may not be able to afford that.

However. to be able to aim bang on out to 200 on a fox and a little high out to 300 is work the extra 34 cent for most lads
