Hats, gloves, scarves and other warm accessories

Given the time of year I thought it would be interesting to start a thread on peoples' favourite 'warm' accessories for the winter months.

Usually I just wear gloves and scarves (they're my absolute necessities to keep me warm), and only wear a hat during the really cold spells or when it's raining.
However, this year I've decided to encorporate a few more hats into my winter wardrobe.
    • So, what winter basic accessories do you wear?
    • Have you a preference for specific styles/colours/shapes, etc.?
    • Is there anything you absolutely hate?
    • Where do you normally purchase your hats/scarves/gloves, etc.

Oh, and tips on how to make them look stylish rather than just practical would also be appreciated! :D

I almost always wear a scarf once it gets any bit cold, I have lots of pretty and colourful ones, great for if I'm wearing dark colours and want a bit of brightness to it.

I like quite classic style, plain colours, or simple patterns, lots of blue, pink, purple. I'm nearly always wearing a thigh length winter coat in blue, navy, black, I just bought a gorgeous military style navy one in Tesco, so a scarf tucked into the neck with a bit of colour looks nice. I don't like thick woolly scarves as I'm an apple shape and they only add to my appleyness, I prefer fabric scarves. I'm not that into gloves, because I always lose one and get mad with one cold hand, so it's easier to just forget about them altogether! I like hats in winter, I have one reliable one that I need to buy more of, one with a little peak and and cute bow on the side, love it.

I hate....fingerless gloves. Remind me of the bad guys and the crazy lady in Home Alone.

I buy almost everything in Penneys, for two reasons, 1. I'm cheap, and 2. I tend to lose things a lot, so I don't like to have spent too much on something when it inevitably goes missing.

I love fingerless gloves that are mittens! i hate attempting to do anything in gloves, never can.

I was never big into woolly hats but last year i got a lovely one in oasis. it was a bit more expensive that id usually pay for one, but it fitted nicely and i think that really makes a difference, i usually feel stupid in a hat.

oh & i like to match: scarf hat gloves :D

I adore Winter accessories, I have about three huge shopping bags full of stuff!

I have tons of different hats, last year I was really into slouchy wooly ones, this year I think it'll be caps.

Scarves, I have every kind imaginable. I got two in Topshop last year that are about 10 feet long and so warm! I love them.

I've also always had a soft spot for Tom Baker Dr Who style stripy scarves, I have about four. Also a ton of jersey and cotton ones in hundreds of different patterns.

I've about five pairs of earmuffs too, I wear them when I can't have hat hair :p

I got into leather gloves last year and have a lovely grey pair. I'm going to get red fingerless ones and hopefully a green pair too. A also have a pair of amazing sequined cuffs from Topshop which are technically gloves.

So yeah, Summer sucks. Winter fo lyf! :p

I'm planning on a winter accessories shopping spree next weekend so looking forward to stocking up on some gloves and hats! :D

The only problem I have is that my head is rather small so finding hats that both suit my face and fit me proves a little difficult.

I've not been in Dublin for the last while, so can anyone tell me if Accessorize/Pennys/Dunnes/[insert other shop name here] have hats/caps/gloves, etc. in yet? (Had a quick look in accessorize on Henry St. last Friday week and they didn't have any of the nice hats or caps that are on the website in stock).

Penneys have their Winter stuff in, I was there last week and came out with a couple of hats!

    Nice leather gloves too.

i LOVE hats, have lots of wooly ones! i hate the hat hair that naturally comes with them though. anyone any suggestions on that?

i like wearing gloves but often they just annoy me so i take them off for ten minutes and then want to put them back on again (and then take them off again.... you get the idea) so i think i need a pair of those gloves that have a strign that go through the sleeves of our coat, like the type that kids have! should be fairly easy to make me thinks!

I'm pretty sure I saw gloves with strings made for adults last winder. I can't remember where I saw them, though, sorry. Otherwise a piece of ribbon would come in very handy!

I love winter clothes. :D I love scarves and always wear elbow length fingerless gloves as well as a normal pair over them. I have a iPod touch and hate when I can't use it with normal gloves.

I like hats but I can never find ones to suit me. I'll have to go on a proper hunt for some this year. I haven't seen any in Penneys yet, shall have to go hunting soon.

Edit: oooh I might get this. I'd love a hat like that.

I love cosy scarves and gloves. I had some white ones before, I thought they were pretty. I never wear hats, they don't seem to suit me at all!

Hats make me look a bit 'special'.:(

I get really cold ears though so I think I'll look into earmuffs like Phasers.

Love leather gloves because you can wear them driving. The knitted ones are too slippery. I always wear a scarf in winter, makes such a difference. I like the pashmina-style ones and fabric ones best, the knitted ones are too bulky. A nice bright colour near the face stops you looking too washed out in winter too.

Just bought a green parka-style coat with lots of padding which I hope will do me for everyday wear. Its got a huge big hood which I like because I HATE unbrellas!

Ooh, earmuffs- I may try those this year- I've really long hair and I usually wear it up in ponytails/buns/tied up with clips, so I can usually never wear hats. Where can you get nice funky looking earmuffs though?

Accessorize do lovely ones, very pricey though!

I usually happen across them online.

Well, what about footwear? I'm the sort of girl who loves pumps but i hate wet feet! Any practical/stylish way of keeping my feet dry!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,375 ✭✭✭fonpokno

I'm swearing by boots this winter, I get so cranky when I have wet socks or feet. I wouldn't even be trying pumps myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,503 ✭✭✭✭jellie

one of the girls in work apparently wears wellies to work in winter & just changes at her desk :)

I have a pair of boots I got in Penneys last year for €12 and they are the best boots for keeping my feet dry. They're tan and like a fake suedey leather, so awesome.

I also have a pair of over the knee grey suede boots I got in Dunnes last year for €20, despite being suede they are still in perfect condition after last winter, and I wore them on so many nights out in clubs and everything, dunno how they survive!

I think I'm going to try some cheapo Penneys boots. I've got two good pairs but I don't want to be wearing them *all* the time. I'm wary though, I had a Dunnes pair a few years ago that lasted well but got mangled on one day with particularly bad rain. Like a drowned rat I was.

Yeah every time I wear those two pairs of boots I wait for the day that water seeps in but so far so good! I will never forget the day my trusty Bearpaws started seeping up water from the slush in Canada, I stopped dead in the street, looked at boyfriend and screeched "My boots! Security has been breached!" :p

I don't know if it counts as warm winter accessories but I *love* lots of tights in winter, when it's really cold I put on warm leggings with pretty tights over them and hiking socks over them then, it's awesome and stylish!

I'm stocking up on my winter leggings and tights too. Hoping to get those really really thick cosy tights somewhere but I might just stick with leggings, it's less effort!

I love those scarf hood things, like giant scarves. I got one in Topshop last winter and it's so, so cosy and I feel all wrapped up and comfy in it. Definitely gonna buy another one this year. :)

There's some nice quality leggings in New Look at the mo, you know the ones that are kinda shiny smooth but keep their shape and are nice and warm, saw some for €8. Saw some gorgeous leggings in a local shop today, in right raspberry pink and bright blue, think I need them.

Winter's my favourite time of year! Overcoats, gloves, scarves, I can't wait til it gets even colder and rainier!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,375 ✭✭✭fonpokno

Colder weather I love, rainier I'm not looking forward to. I'm just not prepared for it yet!

The only thing I dislike about rainy weather is the fact that I always wear cons and, as such, have always got wet feet. Apart from that, nothin better than a rainy night!

That's exactly why i hate rainy weather though! I can't wear my usual clothes i.e. jeans and converse. It must be dresses and boots (which I love but I'm not at all used to). Perhaps I'll get used to them this winter though - I will become a lady!

It's an excuse to rock a new wardrobe, ya gotta love it! I think I should get some shoes that are less paper-thin this year though.... Or I'll just carry spare socks in my bag. Yes.

I don't mind cold weather at all, but I hate when it's wet. Usually when it's raining I'll wear boots with either jeans, skirt or dress. It keeps my feet nice and dry! :) I usually always have an umbrella in my bag, so don't really need a hat, but one is very useful when it's absolutely freezing.

I was in Penneys yesterday and they have 200 dernier tights! for €4!

    So awesome, I'm stocking up.

I love hats! I actually have a thing for buying hats during the winter.
They don't exactly look great on me, but they keep my ears warm. :)

    Downfall - hat hair.

I bought a few light scarves from Pennys last year, and have no problem with the length, but they are quite wide and any time I wear them they seem to make me look like I don't have a neck (seriously), so instead of being able to wear them to dress up an outfit, I can only wear them under a coat/jacket when they're pretty much covered up.

Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid that and make them 'work'? I've tried folding them over, but the tend to look quite rigid then, which isn't good.

    Thanks.

I find the silky soft kind of Penneys scarves great for wearing just to dress up an outfit, I just wrap them around my neck once and smooth the sides down, leave the neck a little loose and floppy, always wear it with like a slim poloneck or jumper and skirt.
