2 month old MBP won't accept disks

    Hello,

Bought a refurbed MPB in July. Now it won't take a CD. I noticed yesterday I could push it the whole way in, but there was so 'sucking in it' as it usually would. So the disk wouldn't go in.

Now the whole thing seems to have shut up shop. Can only get the disk half in and it doesn't make any noise any more.

Is there anything I can do? I didn't get Applecare but I presume after 2 months it's still covered. Is there any software that can show the status of my disk drive? I'm living abroad but could be home in a few weeks and get it looked at then. But I'd hate to send it away as I need my laptop!

Finally became a mac owner again, and now this. :(
    Thanks

If you have the install disc you could try doing a hardware test (hold d on startup), or see if the drive is detected under system profiler (in Apple menu, About Mac, More Info). But I suspect you'll have get it repaired. Warranty will cover it.

Thanks. I don't know how this works with laptops bought online though. Can I still bring it ot the Apple Store in Cork with my online receipt? Or do I have to call them?

I don't have the install disks, left them in Cork (I live abroad now). But I'll be home next week and hopefully be able to sort this out!

Do you mean CompuB in Cork? Then yeah, you can bring it to them. They'll probably be able to tell your warranty status based on the serial number of the machine. Maybe print out the online receipt anyway.

It's a worldwide warranty so you should be able to get it serviced at any authorised Apple service provider.

    Thanks fot the help SP.

I'll be back in Ireland at the weekend and have 5 working days to get this fixed as I have to fly away again and need my laptop.

Does anyone know, is it possible to fix this in so short a time? Is Compu-B the one on Patrick's street? Will they be able to repair it? I'm getting nervous!

As Sad Professor said, it's a worldwide warranty, so it might be more convenient for you to get it fixed where you live now, rather than your tight timeframe while in Cork. If you really want to get it fixed here, then perhaps a phone call to CompuB would help - they may be able to clarify the turnaround time better.

I live in Kosovo, there are no brand name computer shops here, and certainly no Apple. The country is all Chinese imports. They wouldn't have parts or the expertise.
I might as well throw it against a wall to get the disk drive up and running!

Thanks for the advice. But what or where is Compu-B?

OK so! Maybe you've a better shot at getting it done in Cork than Kosovo. CompuB is an Apple Reseller and Service Center - in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. Website is www.compub.com - give them a lookup. Haven't dealt with them personally, but they seem to have a good rep.

    Thank you for the input.

I'm quite embarrassed to admit what happened, but it might save someone else the hassle.

I usually put my laptop in a skin. But I have a special backpack with a padded part at the back so sometimes put my laptop in there sans skin.

One day leaving the gym I threw my gym card (credit card size) in the bag and it slipped into the laptop part.

Then put laptop in. And the card slid into the disk drive and got lodged.
I'd been looking for my gym card for ages. Never would have guessed it was IN my laptop.

So, yea. From now on it's skin all the way.

I got it fixed by Stream out by where one would do the driving test near Wilton in Cork. Very nice and very fast.

Sorry for bumping an old Thread

But I am having similar problems with my MBP
It wont accept discs anymore when I try and insert a cd it goes about half way and then stops no sound just nothing!

The drive has got little or no use the last time I used it was about two weeks ago exporting some pictures for printing

The MBP is 17 months old:confused:

Is there a gym card in the slot?

    No definitely not

Not sure why it won't suck it in?

It'll be either a software or a hardware fault. (That's logic for you.)
Actually, I had a fault with my Mac Mini. I gave it a sharp tap and it sorted itself out.
