BJJ Rolling with a cup on

    Hi,
Been doing BJJ for bout8 months now (using the gi) and entered 2 comps were you were not allowed to use a groin guard in. Now I normally roll with one on when I'm training for obvious reasons however I find it breeds a sense of laziness when completing submissions. For example when doing an arm bar you forget to pinch your legs together or when you have someones back they can tap from you driving your groin guard into their back. As a result I'm considering not using one during training.

This is a question for the serious BJJ heads who have been doing it for a long time. Do you train with the cup on when rolling during training?

Also what are peoples thoughts bout using a groin guard for BJJ in general?

Thanks for any advice, shared experiences or recommendations

i think its totally stupid not being allowed wear them in competition, theres enough body parts up for the taking when rolling without having to worry about protecting there aswell and i never train without it. if everyone wears them then nobody has an advantage either

Because its only 'serious BJJ heads' who roll seriously?.

I had one on to start with but when I learned I can't use it in competition I stopped wearing it.

The problem with wearing them is that the hurt like feck when someone takes your back and drives it into your spine or when they try an armbar and drive it into your tricep.

If you have proper technique, you shouldn't need to worry about protecting that area.

I compete and train without one.

If you have someones back with two hooks it can be very very uncomfortable for them if you are wearing a cup. Similarly for a triangle
You can just mash their face into your plastic ballbox.

I think it's "toally stupid (dude)" that you would want to wear one.

I remember many unsavory pinches of the scrote from wearing one years ago.

Which comps dont allow them. Its a while since I competed, but I've never been stopped for wearing one

I actually started wearing a cup because of accidental knees in the groin from people guard passing etc, i always wear it now

It's ibjjf regulation to disallow them as far as I'm aware.

Certainly all the bjj comps in the gi Should disallow them, but I've been to plenty of nogi events where they were allowed.

Sorry I meant people who have been training and competing in BJJ in a long time with good experience as opposed to people who don't.

Anyway thanks for the replies. I can see the advantages of not wearing one now and think from now on I won't use one during training.
