Six men working as street cleaners have been arrested by police officers investigating a suspected terrorist plot to attack Pope Benedict XVI during his state visit to the UK.
Five of the suspects, understood to be of Algerian origin, were arrested at gunpoint in London by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command shortly before 6am yesterday, after information emerged overnight that the pontiff could be in danger.
The sixth man was arrested elsewhere in the UK capital almost eight hours later

Police arresting some street cleaners doesn't mean they prevented a terrorist attack.
First they must prove that the men were going to attack the pope.

Why are they described as terrorists? Because they may have intended to attack the pope or because they originated from North Africa?

Considering the Pope is the leader of one of the largest religious sects in the world, I'd say he is very susceptible to a terrorist attack. Sure Pope John Paul was shot in the Vatican square itself and there's theories that the Soviet Union tried to kill him.

The information that led to the arrests was not the result of intercepts or undercover work, but was, sources said, more akin to an overheard conversation that could be interpreted as posing a threat.

'Where is 'The Cleaning Product' Muhammed?'

'It is in the poxy cart where you put it, Murbar'

'I have a pain in my testicles sweeping the streets for this Pope. I would like to stuff a brush up his arse so he may sweep the streets as he passes'

It came to police on Thursday as the pope prepared for a round of public events in London. His schedule was a key factor in the decision by senior officers to act and thereby quash any potential threat.
The timing of the arrests will expose Scotland Yard to criticism if the men are released without charge. However, the former head of counter-terrorism at Scotland Yard, Bob Quick, said police had little choice. "You don't have much time to evaluate the information, and you cannot take the risk," he said. "The duty on the police is to err on the side of caution, even if someone is not charged, rather than not acting and finding out you had a real plot which came to fruition."

Quick added there was a public misconception about the purpose of arrests in terrorism cases: "An arrest is a means of investigation, it does not mean someone is guilty of an offence."

When I read the title my mind takes on the accent of the French policeman in 'Allo 'Allo

"The attick on the Poop has been soiled"

Six men quizzed by counter-terrorism police investigating a plot to attack the pope were all released without charge, Scotland Yard said today.
The BBC quoted Scotland Yard sources saying that the men posed no credible threat, while the Sunday Mirror reported that the men had simply been overheard sharing a joke in their canteen.
