The winners of the Your Country, Your Call competition were announced in the Aviva Stadium this evening.

Neil Leyden's Digital Media Centre and father and son Cianán Clancy and Colm MacFhlannachadha's data island strategy were the winning proposals.

Each of the winning proposals wins €100,000.

Your Country, Your Call was launched last February and was the brain-child of Martin McAleese, the husband of President Mary McAleese.

It asked for ideas which could help create prosperity and jobs to help the country climb out it its recession.

More than 9,000 ideas were entered.

How cool is that?! Fair play to the two men.

D6541 An opportunity for Ireland to become a Global Media Hub

The proposal sets out initially to create an Irish Content Industry Association which would then drive the development of a cultural and creative quarter, a Media Park to attract global content industries, and creating the necessary legislative and regulatory environment to make Ireland a leading global centre for the creation and distribution of digital content.

The Proposer, Neil Leyden, is a screen writer and a digital media consultant. Neil formed the Digital Media Forum in 2004, now a network of over 600 digital media companies, with the intention of seeing different sectors of the creative and technology industries collaborate for the economic betterment of Ireland.

Thanks for that. But that is actually the info on the other winning proposal.
The duo from Skerries proposed a "data island":
    D10140 The Data Island Strategy
Through the development of a Green Mega Data Centre Freezone and an International Innovation Area - The Data Island Strategy sets out to build a world beating entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem around Digital Services and to position Ireland at the forefront of its associated spin-off industries.

The Proposers Cianan Clancy & Colm MacFhlannachadha are both from Skerries, County Dublin. Cianan works for a Fortune 500 Consulting Firm and concentrates on helping businesses optimise their business processes and IT systems; Colm has over 25 years experience in sectors as diverse as energy, electronics, medical devices and food manufacturing.

Well done, but doesn't this idea use hugh amounts of electricity? And we dont have cheap electricity at the moment or a drive within ESB to speed up connection to the grid from alternative sources and you need cool temps all year round.

The Sunday Times discussed this topic ohh three years or so ago and they were talking about the Nordic countries as ideal centres due to constant cold air temps. Plus the size of the hub is restricted by security reasons. Imagine a terrorist attack on that facility. You will cause more damage than 9/11. Sorry abit of a Devils Advocate post but not a bad blue sky proposal.

    Their proposal was:
...powered directly by our abundant wind and ocean renewable energy sources...

We don't know what they have proposed in terms of data storage and maintenance/running of the technology. There are new innovative ways to reduce costs for storage coming on stream all the time.

Lets not be dismissive just because one or two pieces of the jigsaw may not fit now but instead work to explore further how they can be make into a reality.

Clearly innovation is something which we as a nation don't believe in!

Ohh I believe in innovation but I believe the green energy is over rated in Ireland. Its the latest buzz words that everyone quotes. Tidal power trials are still just trials and wind energy seems to have some support within the general population but not in my back garden please mentality. It will be interesting to see the Oriel Wind Energy farm coming on stream, hopefully that will gain some acceptability to wind turbines in Ireland.

    http://www.orielwind.com/project_information.html

Of course most of this green energy grid will depend on an interconnector system with Europe were excess power can be exported into the European grid and we can then import electricity back as Denmark does. Plus most of turbine manufacturers and installation experts are from Denmark and Germany so the scheme should provide a nice cash injection to there economies.

We already have a data centre in Ireland that claims its green too and the idea with data centres is you don't put all your eggs in one basket, you spread them throughout the world.

I would have liked us to do more genetic modification in Ireland but thats a dirty subject in Ireland. Some great research projects in Ireland looking at everything from GM of tobacco plants to produce an AIDs cure and development of smart bacteria to breakdown toxic waste but hey who would ever want to use them?? By funding existing science projects at least your providing funding to areas of research that we have a start on so you can build on that knowlege structure and maintain investment in Ireland.

Back on to the original thread a nice blue sky project but nothing too innovative in it.

There are other fora more suitable for discussing or criticising Ireland's energy issues & lack of innovation.

The local aspect of this thread is to say 'Fair dues' to a couple of Skerriesmen for their achievement in a prestigious national competition.

    Stay on topic please.

Actually rethinking this the last couple of days and it's very appropriate that one of the winning proposals comes from Skerries to help pull us out of the mire of the recession here. It's funny how life turns in circles.

Whats going on here? Do you personally know the "winners"?

No, I don't know the winners.

But the link you posted is to a thread on another site that has nothing to do with boards.ie & I've no interest in promoting that site in this forum.

If you wish to make a comment about the Skerriesmen being awarded the prize - please do.
