    What a load of sh1te

The 2 winners are the usual knobs that pass for innovators. One is talking about a global media hub and the other something about a mega free zone. Complete joke of a competition. Why didn't they just call it "Corporate Bullsh1t 2010"?

What on Earth is a "mega free zone"?

    Your Ideas, Our Profit.

Wouldn't expect anything better from Martin McAleese and his fetish for entertaining both alleged and convicted Loyalist terrorists from the North in the past. Although they had nothing to do with this particular competition.

Did anyone seriously think it was going to be a real competition? Try and remember the tacky adverts for God's sake (or if lacking belief, in someone else's name).

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth Like a genuine, Bona fide, Electrified, Six-car Monorail! What'd I say?

Then we could have Leonard Nimoy.

At least they made some sort of effort unlike the snipers around here.

Anyone got any better ideas as a matter of interest.

Not have the competition in the first place and save over a million. That's my idea.

I have lots of ideas. Of course none would ever be selected to win by a panel of right wing arses.

    MONORAIL!

I'd like a 100K for an idea of mine, any takers? I propose everyone gets a million and we'll have a great time.

Here's another radical idea, why don't we stop giving more public money to Anglo Irish Bank? Of course that would never win because it's far too sensible. To win a competition like this you need to use words like "dynamic", "proactive", "entrepreneurial", "global" and "innovative".

Anyone with a worthwhile idea with real potential wouldn't post it on a website for anyone to read and copy.

    As for the winners:

"Make Ireland a Global Media Hub" sounds great but with Google et al lamenting Ireland's poor broadband Internet connectivity and Eamonn Ryan's weak attempts at building a modern network, it's not going to happen anytime soon..

Likewise the "The Data Island Strategy," nice idea but data centres need guaranteed cheap power and lots of Internet bandwidth. Also, a data centre only needs a small number of staff to operate.

I don't mean to be negative but I expected more from ycyc...

I'd go down the renewable energy route, something along those lines, either that or come up with a novel way to rip off hordes of tourists

    Is that your gut feel?

Funny listening to them comparing the media hub to the banks that were brought here in the 80s. Look where that got us...

In a recent survey Ireland finished behind Mongolia for broadband coverage.

This in itself should indicate the potential of this idea.

The Nimbys, treehuggers and professional objectors will have a field day with that one.

I wonder how he winner's ideas would be received on Dragons Den?

I think we need to start to foster a startup culture like that in Seattle and San Francisco (except obviously on a smaller scale), whereby we reorient recent grads and those with a talent or trade away from the great hiring and firing companies and instead into a culture of building small online enterprises from scratch.

But that assumes that anyone would want to go to Cork.

If any of the ideas were good enough in the first place then they wouldn't have needed to be entered into some phoney competition to win backing, but would have attracted the interest of investors and venture capitalists. The fact that they didn't tells you everything you need to know about the ideas presented....big on airy hype, short on substance.

Sure the feckers removed some of the most well supported and genuine ideas from the site before the closing date.. I actually thought it was a good initiative until I realised that.

How about getting an Irish porn industry going. Theres lots of money in porn with a big demand. It would provide jobs for unemployed people as porn actors/actresses, cameraman, fluffers etc

It would provide more money for the country through tax and more porn is always a good thing. Everybody wins.

Where did you get that info from?

My concern about the "competition" is that both winning ideas seem to be along the same lines as plans that have been in place for well over a year, and certainly before ycyc was launched. The "International Contents Services Centre" has been mooted by Eamon Ryan and others since 2009 (see para 10 of article: http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/ryan-left-redfaced-over-timing-of-30000-hitech-jobs-strategy-1833992.html).

And surely the Dublin Digital Hub will take care of the warehousing of international data and the hubbing of digital media www.thedigitalhub.ie ? I thought that's what they were all about in the first place?
