Time for Brolly to go

Notice I don't have a question mark at the end of that title. That is because I believe there is no way that RTE can retain the services of Joe Brolly as an "analyst" for next year.
He gives no insight into the games he comments on, instead preferring cheap personal insults and smart remarks. The final straw was when he talked about Jos Mourinho during the post-match discussion. What in the name of God he has to do with Gaelic football is beyond me.

Yay another anti Brolly thread. It's only been around a month

There's no one putting a gun to your head forcing you to watch him.

And who will replace him? Anthony "Don't want to offend anybody so I'll sit on my fence" Tohill?

I fear for the day that happens.

I totally agree. I'm paying a TV licence and I'm a GAA fan. While I attend as many matches as I can, when I watch a match on television, it is irritating to listen to the smug, sarcastic put downs by Brolley. He tends to be very negative and seems to have very little time for certain southern teams. So yes, Brolley should DEFINITELY go. There are plenty of other analysts and potential analysts. If we're relying, year in year out on Brolley, we'd be better off without analysis.

I agree with your first point.... but I disagree with your second.
If you want to watch GAA on Net 2 you HAVE to watch that shít stirrer, I cannot stand the man, always pontificating with his holier than though attitude. Time to touch on fella!

Brolly is an irritating cu*t and having to listen to his bulls*it on the Sunday Game is painful. How to f*ck he ever became a barrister is puzzling?

Brolly ain't going anywhere lads as long as threads and debates like this open up.

    Controversy sells, plain and simple.

Eh, just change the channel at half time and after. Not missing any of the game are you?

I quite like watching the replays of significant pieces from a match at HT, like alot of people. He ruins this by opening his big sarcastic gob. I also like listening to informative and good ananysis from the likes of Davis and O'Cinnéide. Unfortunately muppet almighty keeps interrupting with tripe, so sorry fella, I really don't think changing channel is much of an option.

I know there's been loads of threads about him in the past, but recently he's just gone too far.

    Banned.

This crops up all the time but some people still don't listen. No matter how much you dislike a pundit, personally abusing them on the forum is not allowed.

Davis' voice really grates my nerves for some reason. That said, as an analyst i think he is quite good, picks up on relevant points while the others are bickering between themselves half the time. Pity in a way he is normally only rolled out for cork games. Would take him over brolly any day.

Even if you aren't at the game and watch on tv it doesn't mean you have to listen to the pundits at half and full time, just watch the game and nothing else.
I don't understand why anyone would want to listen to a guy explain what you have just seen yourself.
Watch the game and have your own opinion on it.

If you insist on watching it and are annoyed every time you only have yourself to blame.

They have to get rid of O Rourke first. Then we will talk about getting rid of another panelist.

I guess that means nobody likes listening to Dunphy/Brady/Giles or Pope/Hook:rolleyes:

Some people like watching it and only get annoyed at Brolly - hence Thread;)

Brolly should have stood down from his position as panelist last year when he represented Fergal Doherty... He's was pushing his pro-Doherty propaganda on The Sunday Game and then representing him on the Monday...

Aside from that, I absolutely cannot stand him..

What relevance is his punditry to his professional capacity? Much as you may detest the man, he is articulate and intelligent.

    Mind boggling comment tbh.

Heh, didn't he write off Cork at half time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,778 ✭✭✭Big Pussy Bonpensiero

He's better than Spillane anyways, what was all that Columbus bs at the start about?? Both, well, all 3 are only there because they're legends of the game.

The thing that annoys me most tho is his constant criticism of cork, even when they do well.

With one all ireland to his name he's not exactly the greatest player himself.

I think Brolly was a brilliant player in his day; but I have to agree. I actually asked the same question today- Why is Brolly still there? We decided that it was more to do with the fact that when he got the job he was current, now he's had his moment and it's time for someone fresher.

But that said, he doesn't irritate me as much as he annoys others. I'm a bit indifferent to him now.

Dont think he s too bad actually. In Fact I think his interpretation of the game is very accurate, just some people cant handle the truth.

He definitely is nt biased just tells it how it is and if wasnt accurate spillane would soon correct him. which isnt too often. Cork people have to just accept criticism alot better..

Well done Cork by the way another poor performance yet still manage to carve out a victory. My prediction was Down last week but it changed to cork thankfully as i wouldn of won money on them and a double with tyrone minors.

Down had all the flair and skill while Cork just grinded out the scores. It reminded me of a stylish black belt fighter against a Sumo wrestler with the Sumo wrestler eventually crushing to death his opponent by pure brute force and strength, but with almost little skill.

By the way Good luck to Tyrone Ladies football team.

Joe Brolley is:cool: always criticising Cork. I thought he wasn't quite as awful today in his constant negativity towards Cork. Perhaps he has been reading this thread? I really believe he should be given a break. His nastiness and over the top bias does not make for neutral analysis.

I heard him on the radio yesterday and when asked for his prediction i didnt even have to listen to know what he was going to say. As usual he went for the Northern team (i dont think i have ever heard him tip Cork or Kerry to win when they have been playing a northern team) and then he started going on about how Downs "system" will beat cork. He's like a broken record. Useless as a pundit.

The most biased person in Ireland when Dublin are playing. Always goes against Dublin, would go for London if they played Dublin and Dublin were defending All Ireland champions and London lost their last match by 75 points.

I can tolerate Brolly he makes a very good point but often spends too long getting to it by going off in tangents.Apparently he's not liked by Colm 'O Rourke & Pat Spillane who both have massive ego's aswell so friction is inevitable. All in all they are probably the 3 best pundits around, the other pundit i like is dara O' Cinnede, the rest i can take or leave..

I presume you're not from a county on which Brolley has an absolute delusion. If you were, you would fully understand how ridiculously biassed he is. He never gives Cork any slack at all and is pretty much 'anti' most other southern teams. That kind of attitude does not make for good analysis. If and when criticism is warranted, then fair enough, every county just has to put their hands up. Constant nastiness and put downs directed at certain teams, however, is just not on.

The only Kerry player he constantly praises is Donaghy. He talks about him as if he is very special. And the only reason for that is because some of Donaghy's family are from Derry. He's unbelievably biased towards all things Ulster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭Pappy o' daniel

The thing I dont like about Brolly is his cruelty towards amateur players, who devote so much to their county. He seems to enjoy putting the boot into these people, and then giggles about it afterwards.
I dont think he's a very nice person.

well brolly can criticize cork all he likes now....but there is one thing clear...Cork are All Ireland champions and he cant criticize that.

That's incorrect, his family are from Tyrone.

Brolly spends too much time going on above how Ulster teams have systems and tactics that the rest of the country don't have. I am from Ulster and it is even beginning to irritate me.

In Gaelic Life, earlier this year, after Derry had beat Tyrone in the league, he was raving about how Cassidy had got the "project" rolling and Derry would be having a great year ahead, I thought when I read it what a load of rubbish after 1 league game.

I've heard him praise Tomas O'Se in the highest terms a number of times, calls (or called) him 'the complete player'.

Being honest, I think he's the best analyst. Might be irritating and can be cruel. But a great analyst.

Two that stood out for me....

Kevin McStay, Bernard Flynn and others knocking Monaghan, Sligo, Louth and others for very poor displays subsequent to losing provincial finals....."you should always give it your best shot" blah de blah.....Brolly quite rightly in my book said that for these guys, they were never going to win the all ireland so the provincial title was what they were dreaming of....after losing that and then having to play the following week, why would they be motivated. I agreed with that.

Second, his analysis of Dublin was class: when everyone else was writing them off after the Wexford and Meath games, he was the guy who asked the question why have they gone away from the game plan they used in the league (built on defence), if they return to that then they could do really well. No one else said that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,525 ✭✭✭kilns

He use to hate Dublin with a passion but now his old mate Gilroy is in charge he goes easy on them and praises the "genius" Gilroy alot

He lets his bias get in the way of his views I believe, his obsession with "The system" and how it cant be beaten, such a pity the Tyrone Minors and their system werent beaten also on Sunday

His comment about O'Gara, the Dublin FF, on the Sunday Game night programme after the Cork v Dublinn semi was really uncalled for.

I dont have no problem him being bias towards Ulster teams or whoever but it's fact he cant admit he wrong is what I have laugh at.

He should bloody love Cork because had Cork picked right team in 93 he have no AI medal in his house

I disagree, Derry were the best team in 1993 for the one and only time. They unquestionably deserved their victory that year.

Where is Brolly now? He is staying very quiet. He once said "he would have to see it to believe Cork were gonna win an All Ireland" Well he can see it and believe it now and he can start offering more respect to Cork. He was on the radio (radio 1) after the first game of the munster semi final against Kerry and I can remember that he gave Daniel Goulding and Donnacha O' Connor an awful grilling that day saying they were bottlers and could never produce the goods under pressure. Well both players silenced their critics on All Ireland final day and played the game of their lives especially when it mattered most.
