How long can you stay on the dole in country?

The economy's ****ed, all our money is going into nama and we have widespread corruption in the political classes. Which is part of the reason why we have so many unemployed in this country. My question is how long can one be unemployed for before it becomes socially unacceptable?

And yes i know this is AH, this is another weekly dole thread rant yes yes.

On a side not we really should make a new forum like AH but where people can talk about serious issues and not get sarcastic responses. Yes there are other forums like the work forum and the irish economy forum but AH unlike other forums has generally the biggest audience. Just my 2 cents.

But that new one wouldn't have the big audience, which seems to be your only reason. Nearly every other forum can give you serious answers if you want them.

BTW, the dole is silly like your new forum idea.

How lame is that? Would like to have been on it at least once in my life.. it's like a right of passage in this country :D

47 years is the most. Then you are shipped to an Island in the south pacific- without prior warning.

f&ckin suits me! I wouldnt mind going to an Island in the South Pacific provided it was warm, broadband enabled, full of naive naked island women and the surfing was good.

Seriously though, to answer the OP's question I'm sure there are people who have never worked at all whether during boom or bust.

We'd get the one of the ones that had been used as a nuclear testing site, and have a life expectancy of 3 days.:(

    17 months, 5 days, 26 hours, 2 mins & 7 seconds.

Anything more than that is just taking the piss in my opinion.

Even better. Three days of utter hedonism and no consequences.

There are some (thankfully a minority, albeit a very vocal one) for whom being on the live register is only marginally less unacceptable than being on the sex offenders register. Those people are usually cunts.

I think most people recognise that, because the number of jobseekers is currently so much higher than the number of vacant jobs, it's not unacceptable to be unemployed for a year (or even more).

Terrible, all too common apathetic attitude to a massive, topical socioeconomic crisis that is getting worse by the day.
Good work, we built this country up on hard work and smart decisions and we will bring it down with apathy.

    Nope.

We built it up on borrowed money and an inflated economy.

I've no problem with the amount of time someone spends on the dole as long as they're genuinely looking for work. If someone is on the dole for years but trying to find work, I don't mind. If someone is on the dole for months but couldn't be bothered to try find work and is happy to just stay on it then that really annoys me.

I know one or two that have been on the dole for years and that are well able to work!but what really gets me is that a really hard working family member became unemployed because of the recession and after 12 months was cut off from the dole and was told to sell the family home to generate an income! Just because he owned it and had no mortgage! he worked very hard during the boom and because of the line of work he had was able to pay off the mortgage! it seems unfair really:mad:

Uh, why not 17 months, 6 days, 2 hours, 2 mins and 7 seconds?

I know a guy who's been on the scratch for the last 20 years at least, he's a gas man altogether said he got a bonus after been 10 years on the dole.
Knew lots of other people mainly from the bookies who have been on the scratch for at least 5 years or more.

Yeah it's sickening to see hard-working people getting punished so badly while seeing lazy people get by just fine.
