You can get a high-gain antenna, for use with your modem. A signal booster would be illegal, so no discussion of them what so ever. If the network provides you with one, that is OK. Three are the only operator in Ireland doing this, and only as part of the NBS.

right, fair enough. if they are illegal i dont want info on where to get them. i understand that you cant have info on illegal activities on this forum but i would be interested to find out why exactly they are illegal. surely i can be informed as to why. i see you can get repeaters for your home...my reasoning on this tells me these should be twice as illegal as they boradcast both incomming and outgoing signals where as an amplifier just broadcasts an outgoing signal and the amplified incomming goes straight into the modem? btw in not a telecoms engineer (obviously) so feel free to correct me!
    cheers

HSPA amplifiers are bidirectional. They may increase power above legal limits or cause interference. They are similar to repeaters, which are also illegal to self install.

The only thing you can install without being a 3G operator is a cabled external aerial or a pair of aerials with cable (to give signal inside metal building) that has no electronics or added power, a passive "repeater".

I do happen to be a Telecom Engineer :)

ah i see so the problem is not with the amplifier/repeater itself. it is the fact that the untrained user might inadvertantly end up crossing a maximum power output treshold thus breaking the law so the most straight forward thing to do is to just ban them?

    makes some sense i guess

cheers for clearing that up for me.

    No. More complex than that.
