Just thought I'd try this thread as life seems pretty gloomy at the moment. It was Jonjo's thread about lighting the fire that got me thinking about it. I've always loved the smell of burning turf (as most people do), but anytime I smell it, it takes me back to the year that my mad Dad convinced two other fathers of young families to rent a part of a bog for the summer. Needless to say this happened in the local urban GAA club after several whiskies. "It'd do them good to see a bit of what hardship can bring"
Anyway, when these three rural-bred south county Dublin accountants woke up the next morning and realised what they'd committed to, not one of them was Dublin enough yet to back down. So the bog got rented and we spent some great week-ends (for the kids) cutting turf and being used as slave labour.
I can't imagine it was much fun for our mothers trying to get twelve kids clean for Mass on a Sunday morning, but the turf got harvested and my Dad used to ration it, as he loved the smell, and would only use it like a good whiskey.
If he wanted warmth he'd use coal or briquettes.
I don't think he would have organised it sober but it brought a lot of people together and I never heard (regardless of what was said under the breath on sunday afternoons when financial projections were due and washing school clothes still had to be done) that any of the three couples regretted it.

And if you had something from school that needed to be signed, while you couldn't rely on a glass of Jameson to mellow them, you could always rely on the satisfaction they felt in cosying up to a fire of their own home-cut turf.

Burning leaves is a good one. Reminds me of cold nights, cider, and learning how to french kiss inexpertly. If I'd just stayed at home sober I would have realised I was great at it and saved a number of fifteen year old girls from cold glossy cheeks.:o

I'm an unsure man in an uncertain world. My aftershave hides behind Calvin Klein's but I'll always be the pillow you drizzle it on.

Fcukin' lovely man. Have you ever had the pleasure of sailing out from Holyhead at night? Watching the lights disappear and knowing you were coming home.*

That smell that you used to get near the guinness brewery. The thoughts of future abuse of your internal organs are enough to keep you going

Fresh whiff of a nice solid steaming buttery shite as it rises from the pan after a good feed of steak and onions and some pepper sauce.

Best caught after about 5 seconds.

Gets a tad sour after that.
