Internal taxation is perfectly lawful within the EU so long as the internal tax does not discriminate against imports. Seeing as VRT has to be paid on imported cars aswell as cars bought in Ireland then all is above board.

I see Mr. Stewart has finally realized that it's legal and isn't sensationalising it on the front page of the website.

Now, if only he could do something about the retarded facebook page.

If you are doing something, anyone can tell it's illegal.
But it's up to him to prove it is illegal.
It's always that way. You have to prove that something is illegal - not the other way.

As far no one proved VRT is illegal under european law - AFAIK.
But what I might suspect, NCT rules for imported cars, are illegal under EU law.
What I exactly mean is that every imported car if it's older then 4 years, has to go through NCT after registering in Ireland, even if it has a test certificate from anotherEU member country.
Some countries in EU had the same regulations, and in all cases when it went through EU commision, it was said to be illegal.
I'm sure if someone would put Irish regulations to EU Commision, they would be said as illegal as well and Ireland would be forced to change it.

    Bingo!!!
I can really see this being challenged in the next few years as it is placing a much larger burden on someone who is importing over buying domestically (which is contrary to EU law).
Also the fact that SIMI is the group who set the valuations for VRT and they have an interest in setting high valuations to encourage people to buy local cars rather than buying abroad.

This thread covers it all, several times over:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055892831

If you can't be bothered reading it all, MYOB is bang on the money.

Edit - I am pretty sure I posted a link in that thread to an EU ruling that says that it's not illegal to charge VRT.
