    Hey Guys,

Just a heads up, free printing will be a thing of the past soon in the labs in Aungier street and Im pretty sure all other DITs.

They are in the process of installing new RICOH printers in all Aungier Street labs... These will be B/W A3 and in some labs A4.. These do not have scanner / photocopy function either. Just print.

I would say these will all be in action by end of next week so if you want to get your notes etc printed I would get in and do it this week :)

After that its gonna be .05cent per page A4 B/W..

    Peace...

Cannot believe this!! Those RICOH printers are terrible!! So unreliable!! 5 cent a page adds up so fast!!! Student Union should be all over this and trying making sure it gets stopped!

Tbh if it means the machines will be maintained and work properly I can't see it as such a bad idea :) Most times in kevin street the printers either broken, out of toner or the network connection is broken...

So I suppose you've contacted the union directly about this then?
If your house has been broken into and you don't call the police, you don't sit around wondering why they aren't there to catch the guy. Union can't fix what they don't know is broke!

Spot on, nearly everyone in DIT blames the union for problems when they just sit on there arse and complain about everything, these people seriously effect morale with other students and there seems to be an agenda against the union, I know they are not the best but atleast get on to them about it, or even get involved with them if you feel so passionately about this charge.

For me I have been paying for this charge anyway and its not a big deal its cheap and printed on high quality paper get over it, you want a good quality service then your going to have to pay for it.

That's not exactly the same thing now is it. The SU should be the first to know about stuff like printers etc. This isn't the same as reporting a personal problem and then complaining about the SU not knowing. It's a student's right to ask what the SU are up to on such issues.

I honestly thought this change came in last year, when they got rid of free printing in the journo lab, where printing things out is essential for group work.

It isn't really the union's job to police DIT and every little thing they do.
They are there to support the student body, and to be perfectly honest, if no students complain, why should the union assume there is a problem?

I was never offered free printing or anything like that. This is the first that I am hearing of anyone getting free printing, and in all honesty, why are some students getting something free that others are not?

My point was shouldn't the Union not be aware of such changes being implemented to the college, like this change will have a big effect on many student's with the increased cost of printing lecture notes.

Tell them! Then they will know!

Personally I don't see why other students should get this free when nobody on my campus does...
I spend a lot of money printing and photocopying, and would love to have it free, but this is not the way the world works, especially not in DIT.

Personally, I think some students have been spoiled with free printing, and seeing people complaining about it being taken away here kinda proves that point.

I think it's not a bad thing. If it improves printing in labs, then go for it.

The amount of times I've needed to print off a report or project only to find lab after lab of printer with no network cable, no toner, no network connection or completely jammed with cheapo refill pad paper. Or find someone that thought it'd be hilarious to put through a print job for 1000 copies of "ur gay" and so the printer begins swallowing up all your paper when you put it in.

They'd think twice about it if they were being charged!

I think the ideal solution would be to have a certain "ration" of free printing per month, and beyond that you pay. Prevents abuse and makes the system a little fairer.

See then they would have to give everyone in DIT that ration of free printing. They would lose money over that, and DIT just don't like giving anything for free that they don't have to!

Any updates? Is this happening in Kevin St. Havn't heard anything about it on ground yet and one of our lecturers said we can take our own paper and it's free, so if it is happening must be a sneaky move if the lecturers don't even know about it....
