Alot of people think a one cent text tax is a good idea i dont because it would not make any money because people would stop texting and use facebook on their phone to talk to their friends, a much better idea is a €10 levy/tax upfront when buying an new mobile phone.

Most (I think) use free texts, top up by 20 every 30 days and your sorted, that wouldent apply to that surely? If they jack up that price ill be shagged :pac:

i don't think so alot of people continue to use texts even though they cost 11c or 12c (network depending) if you were to add 1 cent to that people would still use them,

likewise if you top up with €20 to get free texts the companies will more likely take the 1c levy out of that €20 then charge 1c messages! :)

    i would assume anyways :D

What would be the idea behind this ? Why tax people into texting less ? Is it damaging to the enviornment or something ? Or just another money grab.

Ita money grab but we've gotten used to that under the present lot.
One cent is not going to kill me anyway.

Now if I had a huge bag of one cents, I'd personally like to shove them somewhere on our presnt political masters!

It's starting to feel like that episode of the simpsons when the hollywood crew go to springfield to shoot a movie and mayor quimby pops up every 5 minutes to introduce new taxes and cost increases etc.

    Isn't that V.A.T?

We do send a huge amount of texts every week though, so maybe it could generate some revenue. Having said that, the powers that be would find some way to make a balls of it.

so what if we send a huge amount of texts,
Why on earth are the government thinking of putting a tax on text when we're already paying VAT on the services from the mobile operator. And texts are included in those services !!

    f*kin nonsense

No doubt the fat crooks will eventually even get a brainstorm to impose a "leaving town tax" (aka leaving Ireland tax) on all our best and brightest emigrants. One last kick in the guts.

(better be no "not wearing puffy pants tax" or I'm swimming to England! )

Why do you think it would be ok to slap a €10 tax upfront when buying a mobile phone?

Could you not charge the same €10 tax (on a sliding scale) when buying a kettle, TV, car radio, washing machine, tumble dryer, pint of milk, pair of socks, jeans, make-up, football, concert tickets, petrol, car, bicycle, newspaper, bottle of vodka/whiskey/gin/beer, pint of beer/lager, jumper, pack of knickers/boxers, shirt, the list is endless!*

Why do you feel it is ok to single out mobile phones to be taxed in that fashion?

    *Hasn't that been done already!

Ok, I can not find any news that this is actually in effect.
It was a proposal made by the Greens in March 2009 but was heavily criticised and dropped.
Should anyone have any links that this is back on the table or similar, PM me to open thread again.
