Hard to say really, couldn't see you getting in too much bother using it in built up areas but it's a grey area I'd say. If you had that motor or a petrol engine on a pushbike, technically it should operate only when you are pedalling. That's about the only definite exemption from tax/insurance (i think)

It would fall under the same regs as the Segway.

    Ie. Mandatory Tax & Insurance

once the motor is over 250 watts and it has no form of manual propulsion and the maximum speed is over 15km/hr it is classified as a motor vehicle and needs tax and insurance. looked into this a while ago. Crowd in limerick sell and service them

insurance: the crowd in limerick are reps for a insurance company for them. thats what they tole me last year when i was looking for the other half

Unless the electric motor is only active when the operator is pedalling (called 'pedal-assist'), you need licence, registration, tax, insurance and helmet to use it in a public place.

So, if you can use the motor without having to pedal at the same time, you need all of the above.

Yes - should have been obvious to you anyway, but I've edited my post to include it.

the company does not seem to be advertising the wattage of the motor either. so id say its over 250watt. id say you need a license. and those things have a throttle aswell
