right i know this is a repeat thread , so if any mods want to put it where it should be feel free to do so ...

I've been a fan of the prov1 / prov1x for some time now . But due to the bad form i hit lately and the expensive of nature of replacing the prov's( and the fact they cut to ****e quite easily ) i switched to the less expensive Srixon ad333 , I found these to be a lovely ball to us .

I was playing Royal Tara in an open day today , Chatting to the lad in the pro shop before hand and he was raving about the 5 piece Taylormade Penta ball , I purchased 3 at a reduced price ( e12 ) . Have to say i used 1 of them for the whole round and they are a brilliant ball to use , every bit as good around the greens and distance wise as a proV . The best part was after 18 holes of using the 1 ball it had nothing wrong with in terms of scuff marks or shredding ,

I recommend anybody that uses the ProV's to give these a go and you'll be delighted with the results

switched earlier this year to the Penta and found them to be great. Bought a dozen in Halpenny Golf Lucan this week for €35 which isn't bad

    Pro V1's are vastly overrated.

    In what way?

Have to say I think their marketing campaign is class.

"I don't get to play that often, so when I do get out I want to know that my ball will perform. The rest is up to me"

I personally think they do make a superior splash as they enter the nearest water hazard.

used the ad333 for quite a while as i was given 2 doz of them, found them to be decent. prefer the prov1 all round though - longer off the tee & better feel around the greens. they do cut up easily though which is the trade off for better feel i guess. would be interested in trying the penta though.

    In what way?
That they are rated as the number 1 ball in golf without any competition. There are plenty of other ball makers (e.g Srixon) making balls that are just as good but you still get the Pro V1 or nothing brigade acting snobby. I play these

    pDSP1-7408485dt.jpg

and IMO they are just as good as Pro V1's. And they're yellow :p

Fair enough, but for me the prov does everything it says on the tin and are the best ball out their. Different strokes and all that...

Bit of a generalisation, but I find that people who make a big deal out of not using the prov in favour of another 'tier one ball' tend to do so to be a) different b) because they grudge the money.

I wonder how many of them would choose the yellow srixon or the bridgestone if they were told to go into a pro shop and help themselves to a couple of boxes of any ball they wanted.

+1 on the Pentas. I started using them at the start of the summer and find they perform as well as the Prov1 in fact slightly longer off the tee but resist cutting much better. I would usually get 2 or 3 rounds out of one before putting it into the practice bag. ProV1 you're lucky to get 18 holes.

    In what way?

No feel from them. Like hitting a ball of butter.

Try an Ultra or a Pinnacle - great sensation that you have really hit a good, solid golf ball. Plus, resistance to cutting is second to none.

Taylormade Penta ball is is every bit as good as the ProV in terms of performance . Where is really surpasses the ProV is in its durability , making it a much more attractive ball to the players .

Ask any of the top shops now which ball is selling better right now and they'll tell you the penta is , Both tier 1 balls both priced the same give or take a euro . the lads in the pro shop in Tara are using them and the only reason the pro is not is due to the fact he's tied to Titleist by contract .

Halpenny golf were struggling to stock them , they were flying out that quick .

Hahaha... from 1 extreme to the other other i think! I would say that unless your good enough to benefit from the properties of a penta or a pro v1. That it is only important to use the same ball. Therefore you know what's gonna happen every time you chip or putt!

I'd be encouraging you to buy the Penta too if i had a bucket load of them sitting in my stock room and had a bigger mark up on them than the Provs.

An improvement on the TP, but the fact that i'm still using the Prov1x says it all really. I'd lob them in with the other pretenders to the throne - Bridgestone, Srixon et al.

As i said earlier, different strokes.

I think your a man afraid of change ... the new ball is on the block and your sticking by your old one .... admirable but while lads like you buy old technology at top prices (which is silly as the proV cuts to fook real easy) . Titleist will rake in the cash on the back of your stubborness to change with the times

you infact are buying old technology more often then you would have if you were buying TM Penta

well as you say different strokes and all that ....

Jeez, the Taylor Made marketing guys really have done a job on you mate. Titleist raking in the cash on my stubborness? As opposed to Taylor Made (the company famous for bringing out a new driver or set of irons every couple of weeks). Ha... ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife.

Haven't played them yet but anyone I knoe eho has said the durability is terrible. I've always found this to be the case with TM balls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭aster99

Thats funny, most people i've heard playing them say the durability is great. Can't say myself as i never used one.

Have to say I agree they are a better wearing ball than prov1x and perform as well with a tiny bit less spin in my opinion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭1united

this is going to sound daft I know, but do golf balls have a best before date? the reason I ask is that I recently found 2 half used boxes of balls (Nike One Platnum & TM Burner) in the garage, about 18 months old. Had obviously opened the boxes and used some of the sleeves already, so threw the rest into the bag, but on using them they just didn't feel the same as I remembered, the Nike in particularly had all the feel of a top flite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,925 ✭✭✭BUACHAILL

    I've tried them.

I have tried them also and must agree with Gorhugh I think they perform every bit as well as the pro v. They have that lovely soft feel to them and spin every bit as much too. I think they won me over as one they are cheaper and 2 they really dont cut up as much !!

but saying all that whatever you fancy you wont go wrong with either of these balls

Are they much cheaper? Last box of provs i bought were 40 euro i think. Would the Penta be much cheaper?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,925 ✭✭✭BUACHAILL

no not much cheaper but they are cheaper, I dont pay the €35 asking so I save a few quid and lets be honest every penny counts at the minute, but I think that said the durability of the penta is far better from my experience and that wraps it up for me.

Again wont go wrong with either balls !!

If its worth hitting - it's worth hitting right.

Not a fan of the yellow ones mind you - bit too flash...

I've played the Prov for the last few years. Since I got my Vokeys with milled face a couple of years ago, I found that even hitting one full SW LW shot scuffs them. I bought a box of Pentas the other day, same thing. I really have not noticed a huge difference in the durability, they both wear about the same as far as I can see.

As for performance - all I know is I hit two balls, one a Prov one a Penta, off the same tee box the other day and they went exactly the same distance. So as far as I am concerned they bot go the same distance. I dont notice a huge difference in feel or spin, they are both soft balls.

    Lads,

Any update of pricing of balls. I bought 1 doz ProV1 in South County yesterday @ e40.00. Can they be got cheaper?

I noticed yesterday the Elvery's have 1/3rd of golf equipment (not sure when it finishes). They sell balls including pro v1's.

    Hi guys,

First time on here and this may sound stupid so sorry..Anyway I just got back into golf this year (after about 9 years without playing) and have been playing relatively well. Decided to treat myself to a dozen pro v's last week.

I was playing in a matchplay competition this morning and was 2 up after 14 (playing off 19 but on the way down...) when I hit water. Took a pro v from the bag and from then on left every single putt short. The guy I was playing told me that you must hit a pro V harder with the putter cos of the way the ball is made? Is this true?

It's taken me about 6 months to get my putting right so I'm not gonna start changing it all around again just so I can use Pro V's. Is that the case with those balls? HAving said that it was nice off the tee and stayed put on the green.

I think the guy you were playing was playing mind games with you...or just flat out winding you up.
Pretty much all of the premium balls on the market (Pro V, Callaway Hex, Penta, Z-Star) are of similar hardness and will putt similarly. The harder balls on the market (Pinnacle, DDH and the likes) are harder balls and will feel a lot different off the putter due to the harder covers, but there shouldn't be a noticable difference in how hard you have to hit a putt to get it to the hole.

On the debate of ProV1 v the rest. Played the Penta yesterday and it's durability is better but with the sacrifice of feel IMO.
