Photo Restoration?

I have an old photograph (almost A4 size) of a family portrait that got pretty much ruined after pipes burst in the old house after cold weather and the resulting flood water damaged it. However all is not lost as I have a smaller copy of about 3" X 3" which is in good enough condition and I wonder is there somewhere that can professionally "photoshop" these back to good condition.

I am in Kerry so wonder if there is either like a photolab or someone who does this as a nixer or something in their spare time?

The photo would have been taken in the 1960's and is in black and white and is of huge sentimental value.

    Any Ideas?

There are places that will do this as a professional service. You can have a go at doing it yourself. All you need is a reasonable quality scanner, a copy of Photoshop or similar and the skills to do the restoration. Depending on the damage and the expectations it could be quick job or take a few hours.

Does being in Kerry somehow make you exempt from paying for services? (Don't tell me those stereotypes are actually acurate!)

The sentimental value converts to monetary value. :D

A copy of photoshop?? You do realise that is about €800 and I hope you didn't mean a copy as in a literal pirate copy? I am not asking for someone to do something for free as you are insinuating but rather asking for peoples advice on a good place to get this done, and being from Kerry, I know every town does not have a photo lab as this is a specialised service.

Finally I was also fishing incase any boardies wanted the job, some of the stuff I have seen on here by users is 1st class and I am sure some people do this as a side earner in evenings etc., the way things are here economically every little helps, like the tesco ad.

Sometimes if you have nothing constructive to add don't bother replying at all.

If you could scan in at a decent resolution, say 300dpi+ (Preferably 600dpi+) I'd be willing to have a look at it for you. No promises but I've done it by request for relatives in the past.

PM me & i'll drop you my email. You can send it through & i'll get back to you within 24 hours with an idea of what I can do. I'm no pro but I do & can use Photoshop fairly well. If it's sufficient i'll be able to help. There is specialised software for photo restoration but you get into serious money when someone has to use it.

    Ball in your court ;)

Yes I do realise the price of Photoshop & the time it takes to learn how to use it at a proficient level. This was actually my point in that you seemed to be asking for someone to do this work with all their investment for very little or free.

We have had quite a few people come to this forum looking for things for next to nothing without much consideration for the skill and expertise required.

Where did he say this? It's not mentioned in the OP.

Indeed, and it's very annoying, but if you re-read the OP there is no suggestion of that.

OP if the above 2 offers cant help you out send me a pm, 40% of my work would be in restoration so if you can email the image then I may be able to help you out.

Is a "nixer" not a freebie? If not then I have not understood the term properly and apologise.

No, it would be a job someone does outside of their main job, but certainly for payment. It's known as a "foxer" where I'm from, and apparently a "tommer" around Limerick :D Wonder is there any other variations?
