big car engine = big insurance and thats the way it is. I was quoted 2500 on a full license for a 2 liter turbo diesel saloon after passing my test. It was just not worth it at all.

Go small, its safer and easier on the pocket. The fiesta is a recommended choice around here. Buy a cheaper car and save for the insurance, cos it will be a large sum but much less on a small engined car

Ohh and in before the ford puma :D

forget the passat unless you have money to burn.

Golf is a solid car, I'd be going for a late mk3 golf if you really wanted one, and as I said, save the rest for the insurance.

The polo is solid little car, bit basic and heavy for the size though.

Polo tdi would be nippy enough.

You're gonna have more fun in a focus. They ride/handle really well. Plus theres a choice of engines 1.4 petrol --> 1.8diesel (older model).

buying the car is easy, its getting insurance that is the problem!!,

18 year old males dont exactly get cheap insurance quotes, i would be checking insurance prices first before picking a car

Why is everyone advising a small car for a young person?
In most cases Small car = less safety.

I'm not surpriced then, why so many young people die on the road.
Because who has bigger chance to survive in the collision of Fiesta with 4 teenagers in it, comparing to some old rich guy in BMW X5.

I know bigger cars are more expensive - both to maintain and to insure, but OP never said he couldn't afford it.
Only if he could, he should go for proper car, not something tiny.

Besides, f.e. Primera 1.6 would be slower then Cinquecento 1.1. Not only slower but safer.
And for unknown reason the second one is way cheaper to insure by young person.

I just have to say, if you're looking at a small car make sure you sit into it and can make the clutch/break/accelerate motions comfortably. I find if you're anyway tall or have the feet of a swimmer:P you really need to watch out for that.
