The lights on my trailer have stopped working suddenly. Tried another trailer, same result. Tail lights come on even when key is not in the ignition. Indicators or Stop lights don't work.

Before I pull the car asunder to follow the wires anybody got any bright ideas, please?

    Year of the Passat?

If its 2001-2005 (B5.5) it will be earlier to sort. Is there a relay present? It will more than likely be tapped to you existing vehicle electrics to either tail light clusters so i would check there to see if their still connected.

If its 2005 to present (B6) it will be harder to sort as the proper way to wire in the trailer socket on the current car required the wiring loom to be wired to the ECU and vehicle electrics in the front of the car. Its actually kinda cool but a bitch to wire up on more advanced cars such as the tourag it will stiffen up the suspension, apply more pressure to the brakes to account for the weight of the trailer among other things.

it is a 2006 passat and the connector and wires look ok. Looks like I'll have to trace the wires back.

Hmmm. Maybe a hook up to a vag-com might solve the problem..
