    1. Apply for it, can't hurt.

    2. Learn how to turn off CAPSLOCK on your computer!

My sister is a teacher. She was in the very same situation. Most of the people who told her not to apply for the job were closer friends with the other person as they had been there 3 years to my sisters 1 year. So they were just looking out for their mate.

My sister ignored the advice, applied and got the job as she was the better teacher. The other person was not a great teacher at all. Most people dont apply when "advised" not to. If only they thought for themselves and applied they probably would be successful assuming they were the better candidate.

That said even where I work in an advertising/marketing company if someone was on a part time contract for a couple of years and another person for one year we would find it very hard to tell the person who was there longer that they didnt get the nod. They would have to be really bad for them to be passed over.

Not necessarily true, there's definitely a lot of politics that goes on in picking the candidates - some places more so than others obviously. But it only makes things worse when people don't even bother applying...

    My eyes hurt:eek:

This system of waiting your turn for posts in voluntary secondary schools is on the way out. There was a thread here about this lately. However, I'm not sure about permanency. After doing 4 continuous years in a school, you are legally entitled to a C.I.D, so the person who is there 4 years should get it automatically going into his/her 5th year.

    Apply.

Person "ahead" of you might be complacent and if you show that you are extra enthusiastic etc you might just put on a better showing and get the job

Even if you have no chance due to politics, even if it's already been decided the other person there longer is getting it, the very worst that can happen is:
    • You got interview practice and will be better next time and learned more about any things extra you can do to impress people
    • You showed an interest, good to see
    • You got rejected, go have a bottle of wine tonight and put on the fire and don't get upset

Was in similar position myself before, got job therefore, 'jumping the queue,' bull if you ask me as I was obviously just that bit better. Go for it, valuable experience, shows you have go in you. Best of luck!

I would definitely go for it. If nothing else, for the experience. Be aware though that if you are in a kind of school where other teachers, possible friends of the other runner, are persuading you not to, life may be tough for you if you do end up getting the job.

I'm not for one second saying that you shouldn't go for it - if it were me I wouldn't care about a few childish teachers not talking to me in the staff room because I got permanency before their buddy, but some people can't handle that and I've actually experienced this situation with a relative of mine who was effectively pushed out of the job due to life being made unbearable.

Very 'mean girls' I know but I'm just pointing this out.

This happens anywhere people get "passed over" when they think they deserve a job. They and their friends think you did something to them, when all you did was apply for a job.
    It will pass.

Mostly going to use quotes of what people have already said here to support my opinion.

1 Even in the relatively cut throat world of the private sector theres respect for 'waiting your turn'

"That said even where I work in an advertising/marketing company if someone was on a part time contract for a couple of years and another person for one year we would find it very hard to tell the person who was there longer that they didnt get the nod. They would have to be really bad for them to be passed over."

    2 ' Principals Pets ' get the posts .

"there's definitely a lot of politics that goes on in picking the candidates - some places more so than others "

3 'Open Competiton' will turn this into a Rat Race .While it has its flaws 'waiting your turn ' is fairest available option.

"Person "ahead" of you might be complacent and if you show that you are extra enthusiastic"

ie soon you wont get a sniff at a post unless you have a sleeping bag in your classroom and spend all Summer on courses ...
