I don't know why people keep saying there are no jobs. There are jobs. Employers are just being more picky.

There are always and always will be plenty of temp work. When people are off sick, on holidays, or on maternity leave, a temp worker is needed to fill in for them for a few weeks/whatever.

there is a huge demand for temps of every discipline. plus, if an agency actually calls you about a job you have a strong chance of getting it.

Yep, but you have to say "I am available and can start immediately".

If you say "let me think about it" or delay in any way, they will give the job to someone else.

The keys to temping are availability and flexibility!

CV harvesting maybe? When I was looking for work I'd see the 'urgent temps required' and open days advertisements, I'd race over, go through the usual pointless agency interview, and then sit by the phone hearing nothing, while they continued to advertise urgently for temps of my discipline.

There are indeed jobs out there, I just don't think agencies have as many as they think they do :P

While CV harvesting definitely is a big problem, is it possible you weren't suitable for the temp jobs? I say this because I know there really is a demand for temps...

Of course there is - we don't all get the jobs we think we should after all :) However it was my experience and that of friends of mine who were looking at the same time, all qualified and experienced in the field we work in. I can't really believe that none of us were ever suitable for these jobs that were frantically being advertised...the law of averages and all that.

I would agree with the previous poster! The jobs are not out there. You need to know someone or have a strong backg with the agencies already or else just get lucky at some point. If you send out 50+ cvs to temping type jobs then really, something will come up. But it's not like in the past.

Adecco get government contracts I heard, so maybe they'd be worth a shot for someone looking?
