Being discussed in the general retro section. It looks glorious.

Huzzah! I'll get to experience it's greatness without breaking the bank :D

What did they say in "The Incredibles", once everyone is super, no one is...
Won't Radiant Silvergun lose some of its lustre once anyone can play it, instead of the well heeled or lucky few?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It will a bit but tbh, it's one of the finest examples of the genre ever made so it's still a superb title. Maybe this time they'll localise it so I know what the hell is happening in the story.

Oh yeah! Never thought of that. Would be nice alright to know what those little anime faces are actually saying.

Nah there'll still be some of that lustre knowing you own an original copy of it on the saturn :)

Especially if the exclusive saturn bosses aren't in it. There's loads of them and they are all really good.

    But, imagine if they are!
And imagine they put in some other, I don't know, "extra's" that you simply can't live without?
Would this then supplant the Saturn game as the definitive version?
I mean, we have 3 versions of Rez (not including the proto)
    DC
    PS2
    360

Certainly the best featured edition is the 360, with the gorgeous HD visuals.
But then you have the DC version, and with the Vibration Pack it is the developers initial vision, no?
Of course then there's the PS2 game, and that is, surely, the Rez most fans have played and loved.

    So, which is definitive?

Does the rarity of the DC version make it the most desirable?
Does the ease of purchase of the HD version "cheapen" it somehow?
Does the common nature of the PS2 version make it, "vanilla"?

The ps2 version of Rez came with the Trance Vibrator. It wasn't released with the Dreamcast.

Not that I own it or anything.

    >_>

The PS2 version is the best because it has the ability to make you orgasm:

By the way guys if you are in work or college don't google image search rez trance vibrator even with safe search on.

I know what you mean ciderman. If this one plays perfectly and has the saturn bosses then I'll probably stop lusting after the saturn version. Which is a sad thing for me. All I'll have left is Tombi to lust after :'(

Tombi does indeed have some sexy curves. And who could forget that pink hair.

Some info about RSG in a Treasure interview here:
    http://www.1up.com/news/treasure-radiant-silvergun-xbla

I love Radiant Silvergun so I'm more than happy about the XBLA version. Keeping a Saturn, SDTV and arcade stick connected all the time isn't practical so these ports are more than welcome.

Seems there's a new mode added to this game that makes it play a bit like Ikaruga apparently.

Sounds like a nice setup Fasty.

I'm currently playing it with a Saturn D pad. Would love is there was a 3rd party adapter to hook my Dreamcast stick up to it. None anywhere online though. All I've found is a Saturn controller to Dreamcast adapter. I need the reverse!

    Interesting.

I hear Saturn games are a nightmare to emulate over some sort of custom chips.

I wonder have they got around it properly.

The saturn has been emulated for years now. On the PC it takes a good 2Ghz machine to do it but Sega had a saturn emulator running on the PS2 when they converted Nights. The problem is that the saturn has two processors unlike most machines at the time which makes it hard to emulate on a single processor but with the 360 and PS3 using multiple multicore processors that basically work the same as a dual processor machine, I'msure it would be easy enough to emulate.

If you look at the screenshots you can see the emulation isn't quite perfect yet. You can see a lot of texture warping on the 3D buildings which is a problem when you convert the quads that the saturn uses to polygons. Quads don't have perspective correction problems like polygons do. It should be cleaned up in the final release.

The arcade version of RSG works on MAME, too.

Not really. On my duel core 2.2Ghz machine it runs at about 1 FPS and won't load past the title screen. Maybe it's the newer mame because I got Soukyugurentai which is the same hardware working on mame at about 1 fps and glitching everywhere.

Thanks for the correction, my mind does play tricks on me.
Best not buy one of those second hand, even if it smells like disinfectant, some "matter" is bound to be stuck in the gaps in the casing, best just, leave it alone.

If it must be used, for gods sake, pop a condom around it, I believe it helps with the resale value big time! (icky, icky, ICKY!)

It always worries me how many threads on here turn into conversations about sex toys :pac:

This is a thread about Radiant Silvergun! Which looks awesome. I've played one credits worth in Akihabara, and that's it. Looking forward to getting more time with it.

We're not going back to the pictures of green sex toys are we????
That was troublesome enough the first time!

Actually I'd love to see more shooters coming to the modern consoles, but I prefer real media, not downloads tbh.

    I hear ya :(

Imagine a repressing of Radiant Silvergun on a 360 disc. Man, this is why I hate downloads!

Disc based games are great and all, but downloadable games I think are a huge benefit to developers and players cost wise. A tenner for Radiant Silvergun? It gives old games a new chance to breathe, and the developers a chance to make some fresh income on their classics with low overheads. The low price point is also sure to attract curious onlookers, and those who are unwilling to shell out the high costs to play the original versions. My brand new 250gb Xbox HDD is formatted and ready to go with stuff like this :)

I do understand what you're saying and know my thinking is backwards, but the collector in me just hates it. I want a library of physical copies to browse.

Another thing that worries me is what happens in the future when the 360 is no longer supported and your HD dies? I hate to have to keep buying stuff over and over and over. Physical copies mean I'm 100% guarateed to have the game forever and only pay for it the once. I mean I'm still playing the same copy of Sonic the Hedgehog I got back in 1992! Only way it's going to stop working is if I somehow break it myself.

Spoiled by dodgy hacked shooter compilations on my DC!
Why have one when you can have 4!

But a physical disk could have more than just the games, videos of masters playing, scans of manuals, flyers, marquees, interviews with the devs, a bit like the excellent Taito collections.

Similar to direct downloads of movies, we are losing that we gained with DVD and later Blu-Ray, losing the extra's and travelling back to the film/game only, all those cool extras jettisoned.

    Pity is all, pity :(

It's similar to how my dad goes on about mp3s. He got a Philips streaming media centre thing a few years ago and now has it filled to the brim with mp3s.

Even with that huge selection, he still really misses flipping through vinyl, looking at the gatesleave artwork, dropping the kneedle etc.

I also really don't like the control downloads give the distributor. This whole 'you're not buying the media, just a license to use it' is not a good road to be going down. Imagine somehow the Snes and Megadrive had to verify their games online with a server before you were allowed to play. They'd be completely useless relics now.

Anyway, TLDR - simple version - physical copies FTW!

And, can you imagine when Ninty bring out a new console and you find they want you to buy all those games you have already bought via Wiiware all over again.
Or will your account details come with you?
Is this going to work on other formats too?
Will there be enough backward compatibility in future Sony and MS consoles to allow your purchases live again on new hardware? Or are you going to have to buy your Cave shooters all over again?
A bit of a con really

Here's a good example why digital downloads are a very bad thing. www.gog.com just went down. I had all fallout games purchased from it but had to reformat the laptop and have a new desktop PC so haven't got them backed up and now can't get on the site to download them. They say they are working something out so people can back their games up.

Ah! That's awful news! I hadn't downloaded anything from gog but heard it was a great source for stuff. Hope they can get something sorted so people can redownload games.

Hmm, there's rumours it's a PR stunt now, since it's a polish site and the polish site has a different message. If it is it's a pretty big dick move.
