    Hi all,
(sorry if this is in the wrong place -feel free to move)

basically been having a few problems with my 2 & half year old macbook, safari hasn't been working on main account for the past week, but is working perfectly on my guest account??
in trying to fix it i remembered that i need to do loads of software updates (11 in total i think) but every time i try, it freezes at the configuring items stage & i have to turn it off with the power button. it always works fine afterwards, & i've left this issue in the past because there was nothing wrong with my computer, but now think this may be related to safari freezing??

Anyway, don't really know anything about computers, so think i may just go to the computer doctor in coolock to get it sorted, unless it's easy enough to fix myself??
is it worth it, are they expensive or is there anywhere else in dublin or over the phone that could sort this for me easier & cheaper...?

    thanks in advance

For starters, open Disk Utility (in Applications > Utilities) and verify the hard disk and repair permissions.

To get Software Update working again, try the following:

You need to delete a file called "com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist". There's probably two of them.
    - The first is in Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences.
    - The second is in HD > Users > [Your name] > Library > Preferences.

Also, go to HD > Library > Updates. Delete any files that are inside.

Then restart and see if it works.

    hi again,

sorry for getting back so late but IT WORKED! :D:D:D

i had to do about 30 updates but think they're all done now & safari came on no bother, seriously thanks so much!

btw, can i ask a totally unrelated question...basically ever since i've had my laptop the internet can just lose the connection all of a sudden, & to get it back you have to turn my broadband box off & on again, & it comes straight back every time?
sometimes this happens twice a day & others times not for months, the exact same thing happens with my sisters laptop (& hers is dell) but never to our home pc
...is this a problem with all laptops & you just have to put it up with it, or is our server (bt) should i ring them?
sorry, just thought to ask now cuz it just happened there!

As it happens to both you and your sister's laptops, it would suggest that it's not a problem with the laptops, but rather with the router.

Are you using wireless with both of the laptops and an ethernet/usb cable with the PC? If you, that's not the case, is there anything else that is common between the laptops and not the PC apart from the fact that they are laptops and it's a Home PC?

aYeah, Had a Dell PC running (Ethernet Cable), Dell laptop (Wireless) & iMac (Wireless) along with iPhone on wireless. The two Dells & iPhone were running 1st & I noticed the iMac couldn't hold a connection. If I turned wireless on & off several times it would work & then eventually fall off again. I'm using a D-Link router, nothing special but I reckon it can't hold more than two or three connections at a time, wireless anyway!!!

Anyone know if this is the case?

hi, sorry again for late reply :o, very busy weekend...

yes -wireless box that has a cable to the pc & then both the laptops wireless

& nope -nothing else that is common between the laptops or pc -all bought at different times, different brands etc

No other wireless phones or anything else in the house -trying to think if it has got worse since the 2nd laptop arrived, but i don't think so. it happens very randomly, like literally everything perfect for months & then loses the connection like 3 times a day for a week?
& it always works straight away after you quickly switch the wirless box on & off (though at particularly bad times can drop the connection as quickly as 20 mins later?)
