    Hey.
Anyone studying geology out there. Im in fifth year and I want to become a geologist. So Im trying to get some feedback from some REAL geologist. How do you find the course? Is it tough, and where is the best place to study geology. One of the girls said TCD is the worst, and Id just like to see what everyone else thinks.

    Thanks in advance xxx

Oh and I got six A's in my JC yah

Don't listen to the girl from the UCD forum, she is jealous because she didn't get into TCD.

First off, nothing is easy, everything requires work (regardless of what you study). Secondly, who is this "girl" that says TCD is the worst? Has she studied Geology here?

My experience of the place (I'm a mixture of Geology and Geography with my postgrad) is that it's a good undergraduate course, covers the main stuff (Structural, Petrology, bit of Hydrology etc...). Equipment and labs are good (fission track dating lab is grand, stable isotope mass spectrometry, XRD, XRF etc...). Staff are grand, plenty of field trips. You might also want to consider looking into the BA (Mod) Earth Sciences. It's a good course, mixture between Geology and Geography. The thing with Geology is that it really does require you to think in not only three dimensions but also in how you would interpret stuff. So in a way it can be a bit of jump from the leaving cert where everything is spoon fed and rote. So expect to hear this with any undergrad course you enquire about.

There's no real "best place to study geology", every department has its strengths and weaknesses, but this is more on what the department focusses on. An example would be doing a general science degree, where NUIG has always been the place for marine stuff, TCD has always done theoretical etc... Doing a Geology degree is much the same in that certain departments will focus on certain topics, but at the end of the day it's still Geology.

Well done with JC, concentrate on getting the points now.

If you're thinking about doing geology, do Earth Sciences =] My class was the 1st year to do the course, its a mixture of geology, geography and environmental sciences. After 3rd year you can specialise, and you can study abroas in 4th year =] I love the course, and I want to be a gelogist, too. The field trips are amazing and really fun =] I think the points for it this year were 450 or so, it was 470 for us last year. The only bad this about it is in 1st year you have to do chemistry, which is pretty hard, and physics which isn't so bad. Otherwise try to get the science course, and pick geology and geography modules. Its the same thing but your not guaranteed to get the subjects you want...
Good luck in the leaving =]
