Repeat result fail - options?

This is a lil wordy! Apologies:p

So I had to repeat 2 exams in August. I passed one (52%) and failed one (29%) (this was my third attempt at both). These are from 2nd year of a science course, which I externally repeated the past academic year for. I passed all my other modules in the academic year 2008/2009. As of now I just have this one fail from this 5 credit module preventing me from progressing to third year which has a 6 month INTRA placement.

I am just wondering has anyone ever heard of a 29% result being compensated for in a repeat? I found this particular module to be tough obviously, but it is not a core subject in 3rd or 4th year.

I will be emailing my course head and head of school with my situation to meet up on monday and try to get an alternative to repeat again. I don't think appealing my result would help me...

This is my first undergraduate degree and for the first two years I received a sizeable grant from my county council. I missed out last year, and it currently looks like i'll be missing out this coming year also.

I REALLY don't want to repeat again and want to know my options. The new Marks and Standards seem to be stricter than previous years. I see my course does not in any circumstances allow a module to be carried over to the next year.

For the Summer 2009 exams, I did have extenuating circumstances and the course head gave me a 2nd chance during the summer but I didnt pass. I don't think I would be in line for student of the year with them so to speak, so I am doubtful if they will give me the benefit of the doubt again. But I am not too proud to beg at this stage....:o

I have omitted some other minor details but I think I have given a pretty comprehensive account of my situation....any advice would be appreciated DCU peeps!

Sorry to side track a little, but I am just wondering how much it cost you to repeat the year externally.

Unfortunately you can't pass a repeat exam by compensation. Also, to compensate you would have to have gotten 35%-39%, but that is irrelevant in this case as it only applies to non-repeat exams.

The only thing to do really is get in touch with the lecturer/your head of school but unfortunately I don't think they'd let you away with it with 29%. Always worth a shot though!

    Good luck!

can you not repeat the year and attend lectures of the failed module(s)?

I think I could possibly repeat the year and attend lectures, but I don't have the money at the moment to repeat in this way. Also, the module runs in Spring, with the exam in May.

Go to your lecturer, year head, head of school and anyone else you think of and beg like crazy. I've seen quite a few people get back in for a third go round, but I'd say your chances of being passed are pretty slim.

It's also worth checking your exam scripts to see if they made any errors, the higher your mark the better chance you have of convincing people to let you back in.

To repeat externally, you pay a fee per module, which I think is now €400? Multiply that by however many modules you need to repeat.

Indeed, it's more likely than you think ;)

Just go and explain any extenuating circumstances you may have had to [course head/lecturer/whoever] (if you were sick, stressed out etc.) tell them the difficulties you had and what you'll do to overcome them if you get another shot. I did this and was required to submit it in writing.

You say you only took the exam 3 times? You're allowed a max of 4 attempts (1 normal and 1 repeat the first time around, 1 normal and 1 repeat in the repeat year) to pass. However if you had extenuating circumstances then I dont know how they'd record that, wheter it used up one of your attempts or not. There could also be a clause that states the 4 attempts must be over the 2 year period of the first attempt and the repeat year.

But yeah if you've only actually sat the exam 3 times you might possibly be in with a chance of being allowed your 4th attempt, worth checking out the finer details anyway.

You will have to repeat this exam dude. No way around it. If you could have got compensation, you would have by now.

Register as an exam only student, use ur free time wisely and get into 3rd year
