I see that rte has won the right to broadcast the 11 games listed that setanta must sublicence. Rumoured to have outbid tv3 and paid 750k for the privilige.

see link here where its mentioned as part of an article on setanta, which also states setanta will show all 48 in high definition.

All the 2011 RWC games will also be on either ITV1/ITV4 and ITV HD.

How can RTE justify that amount of money for 11 games?? Thats before sending staff to New Zealand etc...

quite easily, as far as I remember that's the same figure RTÉ paid for the rights to the second leg of the playoff in Paris, so to get 11 games for the same figure doesn't seem all that extravagant to me.

When you compare to 1 game it does i suppose, that's crazy money tho for 1 game RTE just want to blow TV3 out of the water and the have the licence fee money to do it.

Less than 75k a game. There will be 500k people at least tuning into the Ireland games (the 6N games get more than this so a conservative estimate), they will easily recoup the money in advertising.

You're forgetting though that the games on on really early in the morning so your casual fan won't be bothered getting up for them. See the KO times here.

There will be so much hype at the time people will watch. Some games at 9.30am is hardly the crack of dawn.

    A bargain for RTÉ imo

Only the Aussie game is at 9:30.

    Ireland v Russia 6:00am
    Ireland v USA 7:00am
    Ireland v Italy 8:30am

And, assuming we qualify, the quarter final is also going to be 6:00am.

I just dont think a casual fan would be bothered for that, especially considering that these are all on the weekend and people would have been out late the night before.

Anyway i'm not arguing the price being paid because I cant say what is good value, but I wouldnt be expecting anywhere near the 6N viewer numbers (Maybe bar the aussie game, it has time and importance on its side)

I'm sure theyll also repeat the games at a more reasonable time later on in the day for those of us with slight issues at waking up at 6am on a weekend. Hopefully anyway!
