Repeating 'Externally'?

Have 3 modules to repeat, 1 is Year long and 2 are Semester 2. I am thinking of repeating externally, which basically means I don't attend the lectures and only pay the examination fee and then sit the exams, and then study in my own time.

Is that was repeating externally is, or have I it confused with something else? Has anyone else done this?

Is there any info about this on the DCU website? I couldn't find anything on their website myself regarding fees/registration.

I think you mean registering as an Exam only student. You can do this but only if you have passed the C.A. elements of your modules.

You fill out the regular R.34 form, get your program board chair to sign it and pop round to the fees office, pay the few bob and then drop it into the registry

Only one of the three had C.A and the results of that were never released IIRC. But I am confident I passed that anyway.

Any idea how much it would end up costing?

Ring or e-mail the fees office and ask. They should be able to give you an answer almost immediately.

Repeat fees for this year are €55 per credit so a 5 credit module costs €275 a 10 credit €550 etc. You also need to an additional fee of either €168 or €272 depending on how many subjects your doing. Hope this helps.

If you have passed and are happy with your CA mark then repeat externally. This means you do whatever you want during the year and just have to show up on exam day. You wont be able to go to labs or tutorials but you can still always sit in on lectures, which I'd strongly reccommend doing.

I contacted the registry today about repeating externally and I was told it was no longer an option. Does anyone know if this is true? I know I should take the advice I was given, but to be honest the girl who I asked seemed to not have a clue what repeating externally even was. I know it's my own fault for failing, but I simply can't afford to pay the full cost of repeating internally, surely they can't just have gotten rid of this option!

    Hi

I had to repeat last year due to illness, didn't actually sit the exams but did all CA and passed so hope this example helps.

Couldn't sit summer exams or August repeats, filled out all relevant forms to defer the year ( was very sick ;) ) all I really wanted to do was sit the exams the next time around but my head of school said that wasn't possible, that I would have to register as a repeater for the entire semester, redo all CA even though I passed but not attend lectures and sit the exams the next summer. I didn't have to pay though.

I would strongly suggest going to your head of school, explaining the situation, tough times and all that, and see what they can do. They can be fairly accommodating if there's a good enough excuse.

    Yes this is true.
According to the new Marks and Standards, etc. you must now attend all elements of a module (CA and exam). Before your CA marks carried forward from one year to next, but this is not the case anymore. Officially at least, you must attend lectures and do all assessments, etc.
