A lot of classics are licence free and are available for free. I downloaded The Count of Monte Cristo and Heart of Darkness a while back.

Don't forget any free audiobooks in MP3 format you download outside of iTunes can be imported in like you do music. (You then need to mark them as an audiobook using the "get info" option in iTunes).

The only problem with iTunes and audiobooks is that if you are listening to a book it is supposed to "remember" where you are when you go back - except after any sync iTunes (on a PC) totally fcuks with your files and you have to find where you were again.

There's an app called Audiobooks that is free and contains loads of free audiobooks, enough to keep you going for a year! They are mostly classics and they're of good quality.I think that this app is only available in the US app store but if you check the Irish store it might be there. If you don't have a US iTunes account yet look here

Also look online for voucher codes or special offers from www.audible.co.uk . They sometimes run free trials where they give you one month free and you can download any book of your choice for free. They have the best range if audiobooks available to Ireland as far as I know.

If you are a member of your local library you can download audiobooks for free.

I use a utility called Markable to convert mp3 format audiobooks for my iphone, the problem with a lot of audiobooks / CDs is that thecome in the form of lots of smaller files that worked well on low end players that couldnot bookmark of FF quickly. Markable converts the files into a a big bookmarkable file with chapter marks and exports the file to itunes. The best bit is that you can batch the conversions and leave it overnight.

I recommend picking up a subscription from Audible.co.uk. Cheaper than buying from iTunes, and great selection.

Milly4ever, in my case it's the local Co Council Library. I don't know the situation in Belfast.

How do you go about getting the audiobooks? Are they available from the library online or do you need to go in and download them there? Do they expire after a certain time?

I signed up for Audible a while back because Amazon were advertising a free book and 14 day trial if you signed up, I figured I'd take my book and cancel. Went, signed up, went with **** my Dad Says and thought I cancelled, turns out I didn't, charge for €13 came up on the credit card.

So I went back to cancel (Couldn't complain, it was my fault), went and downloaded another book (Catch 22 by Heller this time), went to cancel. They threw a $20 voucher at me. I took that, bought some comedy CDs (A Mitch Hedberg CD I didn't have, stupid drugs and their killing people powers.....) and a book by Hitchens, decided to cancel, they offered a discount plan, I declined, my account is canceled.

I still have access to my books, can download them whenever I want, I login with my amazon details and can download them whenever I choose to listen to them. The app is real nice, has full iOS4 support and it can take in your existing audiobooks and you can listen to them through audible.

Thanks for the tip re downloading library books.

    www.southdublinlibraries.ie have a download zone

Only problem is it doesn't recognise my library card, haven't used in years, so will go up to them tomorrow, reactivate it, I hope, and let you know how I get on.

    Thanks again

That doesn't happen anymore, at least not with remembering places on the iPhone. It used to happen to me, but I plug it in to charge at night via USB and it does remember what part of the file I was at. I listen to audiobooks on a regular basis as I do a lot of driving and it's been fixed for a good while now.

You need a library card and pin number.
Your local librarian will tell you what to do on the library website, it's very counter-intuitive, [when I say it involves itunes you will know what I mean.]

There's a limit of 3 weeks but once it's on the ipod it stays there.

When you plug it in does it sync (PC?)? Plugging in on it own doesn't muck anything up, but iTunes still screws up my files after a sync of any material.

If I'm listening to an audiobook with, say, 30 chapters, if I sync after 5 it'll create seperate audiobooks in the list for each of the five chapters I've read and a sixth containing the remaining chapters (and re-numbers them too). It may remember where I am in any particular chapter - it's just finding the right bloody one to play thats difficult.

    Hate iTunes!

Yup, I have it set to autosync to transfer over any purchases as I never use the iTunes or App store on iTunes itself. I used to lose place the whole time, but not in the past few months, since 3.1 or so I think, but I can't remember exactly. Never had that problem with creating more audiobooks.

Hmmm. Are you listening to official audiobooks bought via iTunes?

The book I've been listening to are downloaded MP3s with a 100's of files, imported into iTunes.

Check out my earlier post about markable -consolidating lots of files into a single audiobook file is what it does!

Nope, all imported. Some are iTunes ready but a lot of them are MP3 files number 01+ etc
