iPhone replacement under warranty

I've an iPhone 3gs (with O2/carrier) and over the summer I noticed that the cellular signal level I was achieving on the unit has deteriorated.
Originally I had put it down to, perhaps, onset of summer and more foliage on high trees in the area where I live.
However, I started to notice that general coverage had deteriorated.

To cut this long story short - I've been in touch with O2 and then Apple and I've established that the issue is a handset issue and not a SIM issue.
I was able to swap in my SIM to my older iPhone 3g and it pulled in 4-bars of EDGE signal at my house whereas the 3gs searched and timed out.

Apple told me they have a service where they will collect/replace your phone.
I think the courier charge is 48Eu (alternatively I could purchase iPhone Apple care for 69Eu and they would waive the courier charge and I'd have cover for longer on the newly delivered phone)

Has anyone used this fault-during-warranty service ?
Do Apple stock iPhone 3gs now ? Might they end up giving me an iPhone 4?

I've used it under AppleCare for a 3G. Replacement delivered next day, 10 days to return the faulty one, prepiad with UPS. They'll have plenty of refurb 3Gs, so no, you won't get an iPhone 4.
