Mixing/sampling live?

I want to "play" some of my music live, which is largely composed on a computer using Modplug Tracker or Fruity Loops. Some of the guys I know play a synth along with what they're doing, but mostly it seems to be sampling/mixing.

It's a bit hard for me to get my head around this at the moment.

I was wondering if it'd be possible to get a piece of software where I can trigger loops and samples just pressing a key on the keyboard. That way it'd be easy to remember D=drum loop, B=Bass, L=lead synth, N=ni~pah sample, etc.

I'm not sure how I'd managed filters and that, but I imagine rolling up and down the mouse wheel could work well.

Or should I get some kind of external yoke? What external yoke would be best if I'm on a budget and don't want to do anything too fancy.

Getting trigged samples in general would be very useful either way though.

Really? I thought that was more for general composing/mixing but I did see people using it as well.

Not at all. I compose my tracks in FL, then run out the stems which i tend to break down into 16 or 32 bar runs, line up all my parts, lash them into Ableton with a load of effects lined up and controlled by a midi controller and use a Launchpad to control the actual loops themselves.

I started on Modplug, ha. I played a 'live' set with the player before. I basically had all my loops running side by side starting at no volume and just brought the volumes up and down as needed. It was quite primitive but this was 1998 and I was using a 486 (no laptop) at the time.

Yep, that's the easiest way to do it.

Full name is Ableton Live. Got its name from its ability to trigger loops/ samples/ effect curves etc in a live setting.
Of course it is also good for composing/ producing.

Splitting up my music is the main issue. I guess it'll just take a little longer to get ready than I thought, I'll have to recompose some of my tracks essentially.
