Eh? It lasts for as long as the judge tells you it'll last.

it lasts 3 years if your ban was only for a year. and it starts when you get your licence back and also your licence must be valid to hold the endorsement

Double check to ensure the endorsement is actually stamped on the license, and do the same if you have it renewed during the endorsement period. The clock is only counting down when the stamp is on a physical license. A mistake on their part doesn't mean you get away with having to carry it.

BTW what that "endorsement" actually is.
I heard about it, i read about it, but still don't know.

It puts a big mark on your license for a few years to let insurance companies know you've been prosecuted for a serious motoring offense, and they'll increase your policy premium accordingly. It also serves as a 'heads up' for Gardaí you may encounter at checkpoints and whatnot.

If anyone is stupid enough to lie about it and pretend they don't have an endorsement and subsequently have an accident, the insurance company will get every cent it costs them back from you, and you'll most likely end up back in court on further charges and receive an even longer period without a driving license next time round. Very serious stuff indeed.

I believe I would be quite perturbed if driving home after a heavy night's drinking, only to see multiple blue flashing lights and gardai up ahead with their luminous yellow jackets.

I was searching for the same answer and came across this info for anyone interested..

    Disqualification/Endorsement Questions

    • What is an Endorsement?
An endorsement is an order made by a judge in Court directing that particulars of a conviction be endorsed on a person’s driving licence
    • How long does an endorsement last?
An endorsement is for three years and it only starts from the date the licence is endorsed. The licence to be endorsed must be in date and remain in date for the endorsement to continue. If your licence expires before the three years has lapsed your next licence must be stamped. If you do not have a licence at the time the endorsement cannot run until you obtain a licence.
    • Can the length of the endorsement be reduced?
No. All endorsements are for three years.
    • If I have more than one endorsement do they run together?
Yes, provided all endorsements have been stamped on the licence, which is in date.
    • Can I appeal against my endorsement?
No. You may appeal against the conviction, however if the conviction is upheld the endorsement still stands.
    • If I am disqualified from driving what do I do?
If you are disqualified from driving you must hand in your Driving Licence to the Court or to Motor Tax Office, Lifford.
    • When does my disqualification commence?
Disqualification commences 15 days from the date you were in Court, unless otherwise directed by the Judge. If an appeal is lodged within 15 days from the date of court, conviction is void until the appeal is heard.
    • What happens to my licence?
Your licence will be stamped in the District Court Office and sent to the appropriate Motor Taxation Office (where licence was issued) who will retain it on file for the duration of the disqualification. The disqualification carries an automatic endorsement commencing from the expiry date of the disqualification.
    • If I hold both a full and provisional licence/learners permit at the same time do both licences need to be submitted to the Courts for disqualification/endorsement?
Yes all valid licences held by the convicted driver must be endorsed.

Hi Thanks for the above do you have a source? Im getting conflicting reports from different threads. Some saying endorsement runs alongside disqualification some saying that the clock starts ticking after the disqualifaction?

    Hi Brian,

Thank you again for this information and taking the time to provide sources. The ironic thing is that I checked a number of county motor tax and fair dues to Donegal .

Just got in confirmed by both the RSA and Motor taxation office. The endorsement starts from the time the disqualification ends.

I just telephoned both the RSA and local taxation office. The endorsement starts when the disqualification ends.
