I recorded a music programme on to a DVDR and I want to just extract one song from it. Is there some free or spyware-free trial software that I can use to just chop up the video and take out the part of it the video I want?

Use dvddecrypter http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/ to rip the disk, Real Player http://eu.real.com/video# to convert the video to mp3 & Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ to cut out the part of the music you want.

    Thank you .

I don't want to convert the video to mp3. I just want to upload the video in erm, a video format.

Just to clarify, I have a half hour video and I only want to take a little piece of it out. What programme can I use to chop it up?

If you're using a PC then I think Windows Movie Maker is free.

It is and I do have Windows Movie Maker but it doesn't recognise VOB files which are what the DVDRs obviously are.

Download the 30 day trial of Sony Vegas http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/trials/vegaspro it will let you import .vob files, cut what section you want and render it to whatever format you want.

Or download mediacoder http://mediacoder.en.softonic.com/ (probably the best free file converter) and convert the file and edit it in Windows Movie Maker.

Both of the above come in 64-bit versions so if you have a 64-bit OS & machine they will be faster.

Let us know if you have any problems

dacogawa, thanks for the Media Coder but I can't work that thing at all. I of course want to convert the VOB files into something manageable that I can edit then burn onto a DVD ie. MPEGs or something but I think that programme is a bit more advanced that I what I can grasp.

    Hi Butch,

Just try to drag and drop the .vob into the file window (near top left) then below that there are tabs (preview, generic, video, etc) click to video and change the format to mpeg2, select where you want your file to be encoded to (output folder, on the top right) then click the 'Start' button on the menu bar (to the left of the output folder)

This will give you an working MPEG, you might want to mess about with the sound (audio tab beside the video tab) or your bitrate (in the video tab) if your not happy with the converted video.

Let me know if you have any problems
