Paul Townend and other 'young' jockeys

I'd watch horse racing practiacaly everyday Paul Townend for a guy who is only 20 (today btw) and he is failry unreal for his age and has accomplished so much . . .Ruby is a good jockey but can b very rude and doesnt appear th same person off tv its pretty much a show he can be very rude but tat comes with th job as I worked on a race coruse for the past six year I have met Ruby on many occasions and tbh he could be a hell of a lot nicer. Paul is a gentle man down to his toes. . and as for flat jockeys... Gary Carrol, Leigh Roche Joseph O Brien And Danny Mullins are the next big things, not just for his name but Joseph O Brien's wins come mainly from outside yard not from his father . . .Danny hadn't a great season but come this time ten years he will be champion jockey. . . .even though Danny is from Irelands biggest racing dynasty doesn't mean he gets more chances but at the same time being a Mullins you couldn't not be a good jockey. . . and on Matthew O Connor if he wasn't so unlucky he would be good also but is still young. . ADRIAN HESKIN is a massive rising star and is too brave on horses but is very good and has the right approach, Paddy Mullins openly says he is too heavy to be a professional but he is currently in college in Maynooth and is one of Irelands finest Horsemen. We as Irish should be very proud of these young lads they do us proud.

I said on another thread about how good Heskin is. I think Joseph O'Brien might have weight issues in a few years, but he is a fantastic jock.

Joseph is very tall for a flat jockey im small an hes well over me th day i met him id 3 inch shoess on so u cn make ur own mund up in dat

I remember seeing him standing with the other jocks before his run on Beethoven there a few weeks ago and was nearly as tall as Jim Crowley, and he's huge for a jockey and has alot of weight trouble.

It costs nothing to be nice and polite to people, regardless of how much they may bug you. Irrespective of whatever job one does, it's still common decency. And just because somebody is famous or well known does not give them the right to dismiss or be rude to somebody. And that goes for everybody in any job, not just X jockey in the racing industry.

I've moved the above posts into this thread, as the 'Paul Townend' thread in which they had been posted was over a year old.

Please feel free to continue the discussion here.

Eddie O'Connell is a great young jockey. Had a good treble there a while back and is doing very well.

I reckon Paul Townend, Adrian Heskin and Gary Carroll will be up there with the all time greats!

Wow, I didn't realise Townend was that young, he has had my attention the last few years. I assumed he was at least mid twenties. Big future ahead for him.

That's odd about Ruby, a pal of mine was in Portugal last week (I couldn;t afford to go and he met AP , raging I missed that), he said he was a nice guy and let my mate get a picture, when you see him on telly you would think he is a gruff individual. And before anyone says he was drunk, AP doesn't drink.

Na,I always thought AP came across as really sound too.

yeah i agree - i've heard that AP is really sound and will take time to talk to fans. Not like Walsh, who is as ignorant as they get.

Townend is a super guy, and a super jockey.....just like Gary Carroll, Heskin, Ben Curtis. I've had no dealings with Joseph O'Brien or Leigh Roche.

Agree with everything you said OP except Patrick Mullins.
The lad is poor in a finish lmo.
He seems to be getting worse with experience not better.

Having seen Ruby stop and pose for photographs and autographs in both Bellewstown and Listowel recently I would have to say he couldn't appear to be nicer. In fact Ruby was about the town last Thursday after racing and chatted away to anyone who approached him.

People have to realise they don't own a jockey just because he's popular and they like to have punt on him. Being a top jockey is stressful enough with the tight schedules at a racetrack without having every Tom, Dick and Harry looking for a piece of you, looking for a tip, offering advice, etc.., I've seen jockeys getting hassled for attention when they are trying to weigh in or going down to the ring.

When PT is the same age as RW then we'll compare. Very few up and coming jockeys will cut off their nose to spite their face.

I wouldn't wait that long to compare the two, bluetonic,if I were to choose one of them to sit on a horse I owned I'd have Townend.

You're missing the point, I am talking about the amount of attention they get from idiots.

PT could walk down the betting ring in normal clothes and few would batter an eyelid let alone recognise him, whereas RW would be surrounded.

Riding ability is not the topic of my discussion.

    Aw right,I misunderstood it.

I tend to agree with you anyhow on the other from some of the rides I've seen from PT.

Another thing I like about Townend being on a horse ahead of Ruby is the better value you'll get. People who don't know racing back Ruby, but wouldn't necessarily do the same with Townend, even if he's on a Mullins' horse. Prime example was when I backed Golden Silver at Fairyhouse in a handicap chase at 9/2,he was the best horse in the race by a mile. If Ruby was on it I really feel he would have been nearer 2/1 or 5/2

In fairness to the occasional race goer Ruby's shock of grey makes him much each to spot

ive watched townend ever since he won the dingle derby on tony b and have to say he has done nothing but learn and get better..... to take on rubys rides when ruby was injured was some task but he stood up in his irons and rode like a demon

Ireland is blessed with an abundance of young jockey's as has been for years. I think the RACE programme (discussed elsewhere) is only part of the succes albeit a large part of it. Trainers like Jim Bolger and Michael Hourigan and owners like Michael O Leary, JP and Dr Lambe give a lot of young jockeys a chance on their horses even when a more experienced jockey is available. It is nowhere near like this across the pond where you see a really top class jockey like Denis O Regan getting let go by Howard Johnson & Wylie because of pure petulance. Also I think the amount of conditional, amateur and amateur ladies races offer far better oppurtunities for younger jockeys to get a few winners under their belt. AP and Dickie Johnson are usually battling out for bumper winners in England where as here it is amateurs only alllowed.

On the topic itself Adrian Heskin is my favourite young NH jockey and his ride on Church Island in Sandown this year was remarkable, nice to see him picking up a few rides outside of Michael Hourigans yard also. Hourigan is a great judge of a jockey though after putting Adrian Maguire, Timmy Murphy, Tom Doyle and Shane Broderick through his yard before.

On the flat my favourite young jockey would be Gary Carroll and he has started racking up the winners lately.

I totally agree with you . I would love to find out if Ruby was after winning as much as Paul at the same age though . . .

Sorry about dragging up an old thread.A lad who was in my year in school rode a winner the other day at Carlisle on Jammia in the first, gave it a nice ride from the front. Had a big priced winner in a bumper at Sligo a while back, hope he does well.I hear his younger brother is over at a stable in Wales too, meant to be good.
