Damage from floods the Monday before week was quite extensive around Wicklow. Footbridges near Baravore washed away. Landslides on the zigzags. Glendalough hotel inundated....

There was localised flooding around Aughrim too. I heard that upstream on the River Ow got blocked and the resulting build up of water which then got released washed all before it. The bridge at Ironbridge is extensively damaged and closed to car traffic. Pics here

Hi. Sorry to go off-topic but saw some of your pics on pix.ie and if I could be cheeky.. Just wondering where you start your ascent of Croaghanmoira from? Is the track up the mountain obvious from the road?

Not the OP :) But there's easy access from the Drumgoff road at a parking spot near the top of the hill. The entire ridge can be walked from an access road further towards Drumgoff/Glenmalure. The track is reasonably obvious but it's hard to go wrong even if you don't pick it up.

Cheers. Heading down the country with work in the next couple of weeks and might get a quick up-and-down of Croaghanmoira done.

Yep. Its opposite the trailhead towards Carrawaystick / Lug so pretty obvious. Through or over a gate and follow an obvious trail towards the edge of the forest which joins a broader track to the top of Croaghanmoira. Map here

Thanks for that. Down that way Sunday morning to do a bit of hiking. Might actually get a run up Croaghanmoira in beforehand. Looks a pretty short run up..

I have 10 years of rainfall records and the 6th was my wettest day (00-24h) in my records with 54mm
In parts of the midlands there were 24 hour totals in excess of 120mm.

That would explain it! Just as well it didn't last longer.

    Give a little back.

Anyone interested in giving up one day at the weekend and getting all hot and sweaty? I'm hoping to be there but may not be able to make it as I might have to do an airport pickup. Details below.

Following the recent landslides in Glenmalure at Carrawaystick Brook some of the work carried out by Mountain Meitheal has been damaged. Fortunately the bridge remained intact but because of the severe water surge down the brook we have had to reinforce the buttressing. This has been done by machine. We now need to repair the damage to the track leading to and away from the bridge. We also need to clear the debris from behind the cottage and replace the wooden steps leading away from the bridge with stone steps.

To this end Mountain Meitheal is putting on an EXTRA WORK DAY on Saturday 16th October 2010.

This clean up operation is an ideal way for the walking community to “give something back”. This is a much used access route and we should all make an effort to support the landowner. We need bodies – lots of them.

Mountain Meitheal will have some tools but maybe not enough so bring shovels, spades, buckets and work gloves if you have them.

We would be grateful if all club secretaries could circulate this appeal to their members.

Come prepared for all weathers, wear appropriate footwear and bring a pack lunch. A warm drink is advisable at this time of year.

Meet at the Glenmalure Lodge car park at 10.30 am. Parking has been arranged - we will pool cars and then drive to site.

For further details if required contact Shay Walsh at 087 238 258 1 or at shaymwalsh@eircom.net

    Directions:
In Laragh turn left at Lynams Pub on to the R755. After a narrow bridge turn right on to the Military Road. It is signposted to Glenmalure 14k. Continue on past the Shay Elliot monument on the left at the top of the hill. Continue down hill until you come to the cross roads. Turn left into the hotel car park where we will assemble. We will leave for the site at 10.30am sharp.

Thanks for the heads-up on that dogmatix - I actually managed to drag my lazy dorsal midsection out of bed and went to it :D.

Good - lots of people (seemed like ~20-40). Drainage channels by and above the beginning of the zigzags repaired/improved for the next deluge and approach path smoothed out. :)

Cycled across the new bridge at Ironbridge today. All repaired and accessible by car traffic. Credit to Wicklow co council. A fine job.
