Yes, I think ebi is reliable, more or less. I know when I looked at my cows' performance last year, the high ebi animals did better for fertility and milk solids, so I reckon it works. That was also the clear conclusion of the discussion group data at the farm walk in Offaly last week. I wonder if it's more suited to manufacturing herds than liquid, though.

    What about you?

Yeah, I know what you mean; liquid milk's different. If you're in Herdplus (€60 p.a., good value) you'll get an ebi report a few times a year. That way you could look at your own herd and make your own mind up.

wont be much different for longer. as of jan '11 all liquid suppliers in glanbia will be paid on their surplus to contract, based on the a+b-c system.

ebi has a lot of good points to it, however i dont take it as gospel, like anything you take the best of it and use it for yourself.
however it is probably one of the best index's around at the moment.

Have liquid quota as well as manufacturing and are low in ebi. its not as important when in liquid as manufacturing but im looking to improve the ebi of herd in next few years esp fertility.
Definitely oman and his sons will help to improve ebi and fertility but type will suffer.
I think some of the high ebi bulls are very poor because they are neglecting type altogether though.
Its no good having high fertility cows if they have to be culled because of poor feet and legs or an udder hitting the ground.
Its about striking a balance and taking care picking the bulls you use.

I dont think you could buy an animal solely on ebi.

I BOUGHT AN OMAN BULL OVER 2 YEARS AGO , HE DID A GREAT JOB ON IMPROVING EBI , HE WAS FROM A GREAT COW FAMILY- sorry about the capitals:rolleyes:- my calves that are being born from him are nearly all over 100 in their ebi... he cost me 3000 at the time , i think it was money well spent as the ebis are moving in the right direction , unfortunately he turned wicked so is gone to the big cow herd in the sky

money well spent alright, you should have no trouble with them cows.
AI companies will need to come up with good outcrosses to put on all the oman blood out there. I hope a good Ramos son becomes available, great fertility and type but lacking a little on milk and solids.

Never used any oman but bought an oman son last week from a good cow family. very happy with the purchase

i hate the way ai companies seem to stick with the one bloodline for years , it was ruu/.rdu for years and lbo for years before that... i asked the ai rep should i be using something other than oman straws and he said why?

well the ai rep should know you will be forced into using something different when you start breeding your oman heifers. Its an easy sell for ai reps at moment, some of them need to work harder and know more about dairy genetics. The amount of people selling dairy semen from a beef background around my area is crazy and we are supposed to be taking advice from them.

yes that is why when isold the oman bull i bought a british friesian bull as i knew there would be no oman breeding in him so i ran him with the heifers

Ebi is not gospel. One animal will have plus or minus 60 of an ebi on its printed figure. Eg a cow with ebi of 150 will have a figure between 90 and 210 on average. But 100 cows with ebi of 150 will have ebi of 140 to 160. Herd average is best figure and use indivigual figures with care
