    I went for an interview back in feb for a company in my hometown. Wasn't successful, BUT, I liked what I saw and heard good things about the company so e-mailed the manager who interviewed me about the possibility of work experience. He said he'd check it out for me but couldn't promise anything. This correspondence went on for 2 months but to still no avail.

    Then, 2 weeks ago, a friend who works there, told me of a position going in my area. I looked at it and my skills and experience match those required so I applied.

    As well as applying, I emailed the manager, who I had been e mailing for work experience, telling him that I applied for the job. He replied stating it this job was not in his department, but gave me the name of the man who was over the job.

    Now... Even though I never met or came across this individual and his name was not on the job spec, should I include him in the e-mail that I send to HR to follow up on my application? Should I state that such a manager gave me his name and state I had been in contact with that other manager regarding the possibility of work experience?

    Better yet, phone the guy direct, explain the situation and offer to email him your cv.

    In the email mention the name of the manager who put you in touch.

    If he tells you to email it direct to someone else in HR (rather than directly to him), C.c him on the email anyway. It would't hurt. And once again mention the name of your previous manager, perhaps as part of the cover note (they will likely phone your previous manager to find out if you were any good)
