    Hi,
I did my H.Dip in Youth Work and Community Development in 2008 and wanted to know if i can use this for getting into teaching second level?

I was told i need to go back and do the teaching H.Dip but the only thing i would be doing there is refreshing on my B.A subjects .

The main subjects i would be interested in doing is P.E, C.S.P.E, Biology and maybe English.

Can i at least do subing with the qualification that i have?
Any help would be appreciated as the dead line is only around the corner for next year's entires! Thought i would check on here first for advice.

    Thanks

You wouldn't be refreshing your BA, you would be learning how to teach. I have no idea what Youth Work and Community Development entails but I imagine it's quite different to standing in a classroom.

What is your degree in and is it on the Teaching Council list of recognised qualifications? Doesn't matter what you would like to teach, you will only be able to teach the subjects you are qualified in.

Anyone can sub, but competition is fierce, there's not much work out there and there are already plenty of unemployed qualified teachers.

Um... no... you'd be learning educational theory, sociology and philosophy of education, teaching methods.... plus how to teach the subjects you're qualified for by virtue of your BA.

No, it's not a teaching qualification.

You have four subjects to degree level that are recognised by the Teaching Council?

Apologies if the answers are sharp but a lot of people seem to think that any ol' degree will get you into teaching in an extremely competitive jobs' market.

Thank you all for your replies.
My B.A subjects are English and Sociology. Thus i was thinking Eng and CSPE.

I understand (after a bit of research) that i would need to use the subjects that i have from degree level.

What is the proper route then for PE teaching?
I have taught PE in primary schools before but was wondering what the official way to go when interested in doing it in second level education?

    Thanks again

Most of the PE teachers I know trained in UL,

Degree in PE from UL, this takes four years, but the teacher training is part of the degree so you would not need to go back and do the PGDE afterwards. You also choose another subject to teach with PE, so as you already have English it would make sense to choose one of the other subjects to widen your range. In UL you can choose between English, Irish, Maths, Geography and Chemistry.

You can also do a degree in PE teaching in UCC.
