Waterford to Limerick Jn: Better journey times & connections from Mon 20th Sept by Corporate Communications

A new rail schedule will operate on the Waterford to Limerick Junction route from Monday 20th September coming.

The new schedule will offer customers improved journey times and better connections with other trains at Limerick Junction and Waterford.

A full timetable is available here, and customers can also get timetable details from the journey planner at www.irishrail.ie .

A summary of the changes to be introduced are:

06.30 Waterford/Limerick Junction Deferred to depart at 06.40 - faster journey time by 4 minutes, and improved connection at Limerick Jn to 07.30hrs Cork/Heuston (wait time reduced from 19 minutes to 13 minutes)

12.30 Waterford/Limerick Junction Deferred to depart at 12.40 - faster journey time (4 mins faster), and improved connection at Limerick Jn into 13.30 Cork/Heuston (18 minutes wait reduced to 12 minutes)

16.15 Waterford/Limerick Junction Deferred to depart at 16.45 - faster journey time (4 mins faster), and improved connection at Limerick Junction into 17.30 Cork/Heuston (wait time reduced from 33 minutes to 9 minutes)

08.50 Limerick Junction/Waterford - Faster journey time (3 mins faster)

15.10 Limerick Junction/Waterford Advanced to depart at 15.00 - faster journey time (27 mins faster), and improved connection at Limerick Jn off 13.00 Heuston/Cork (19 minute wait reduced to 9 mins) - also gives connection into 16.50 Waterford/Heuston

18.45 Limerick Junction/Waterford - faster journey time (2 mins faster)

This will require the use of only one train rather than two on the route. The early morning service is actually 6 minutes faster than before.

The 1510 is accelerated so much as it no longer dawdles along to wait to cross another train at Carrick-on-Suir.

What they need to do now is to put on a few trains on a Sunday. It would be handy for people going to college in Cork and the like.

What about the impending closure of the line for 10 weeks for engineering work?

I thought that was the line from Waterford to Rosslare harbour, I havent heard anything about the line to Limerick yet. This timetable is a good sign that they might want to keep the line to Limerick open.

Passenger services are withdrawn from this Saturday between Waterford and Rosslare.

Yes, this is a good sign that they're at least looking at the other line and making improvements

Thats the killer for this line, no Sunday trains which prevents this line from utilizing its full potential - students, day trippers, tourists, commuters etc. Why dont they use the spare set from the Rosslare line and add in an early morning weekday morning service (07.00) from the Junction to Waterford and a 18.00 evening service to the Junction from Waterford. How about a Mark III set running.

For Sunday how about a mid morning 10.00 from Waterford and a 16.30 service primarily for students with change at Limerick Junction for Cork, Tralee and Galway (original train straight run then to Limerick Colbert) and vice versa from the Junction.

If the private operator gets up and running for the Waterford - Rosslare line, the service would really take off.

they would have to pay a driver and ticket seller for the train and then all the gatekeepers and crossing people would have to get extra money for working on sundays so this will never happen:)

Are any of the gates being automated during its ten week closure? Automate a few of them and you should have enough to shift-rotate to cover a 7 day period at a lot less cost than hiring extra ones.

Automation, hello. I presume the 10 week work will include that.

The 10 week closure entails the complete automation of the line from Limerick Junction to Clonmel.

IE are now using one train where it used to use two. Doesn't it make you wonder how come they never thought of that before... Also makes you wonder what the Rosslare based 2700 crew are doing - surely not just sitting in Rosslare as relief?

If that's the case then there is no excuses for Sunday services not to be reinstated.

This line is actually very difficult to schedule given that you are constrained by the departure and arrival of trains at Limerick Junction to/from Dublin and Cork and also by the location of loops (Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir). I have discounted Tipperary loop as there is only one platform there and it is going to be removed.

With the 0640 service from Waterford, any train in the other direction would have to leave the Junction at 0635 to cross the other train at Clonmel. It could though then form a commuter service into Waterford at 0730 from Clonmel. Operating at three hourly intervals a service could then operate crossing at Carrick-on-Suir.

Really, a redeveloped Limerick junction (to accommodate all possible changes together ), combined with some direct Limerick - Waterford services (combined with the Limerick - Limerick Junction shuttle), and a Sunday service are what this line needs.

Totally Agree. Clonmel commuter to Waterford getting in about 8.30ish. Perfect time for jobs/college. Even just start it at Clonmel/Tipp. Use the Rosslare set thats so underused!

I don't think that 2700 will be there to be used. With Rosslare and the one LJ rotation gone there's nothing for it to do. Refit in Inchicore or sent to Limerick I bet.

Bring it up and use it for more commuter services ex heuston. There needs to be regular 1/2 hourly services from Heuston to Kildare and allow the intercity services to go non stop to Kildare and allow for passengers to be picked up in station outside of heuston to merge with intercity services at Kildare. The current is okay but there is room for improvement.

Funny how Irish Rail always state their apologies for "any inconvenience that may be caused", as if passengers can be indifferent to being delayed. Weasel words.
