Does Old Sim Card Die

A friend is moving his O2 number over to tesco's mobile sim card. Does the O2 sim card then die completely or can contacts still be got from it. (I know these can be moved b4 hand anyway) just curious.

As long as he makes sure all contacts are copied to the SIM.
