Macs / Audio

Is there a decent site for setting macs up for audio apps (like for windows there are services you can disable etc... or themes to remove to stop sounds playing on events)

Looks like live work is on the cards so going the Mac lappy route live (as they run cooler and my only other laptop would expire in a club) - just getting a cheap G4 as i have pcmcia soundcard for live and not running anything intensive.

    Many Thanks in advance.

True, there are no nasty background things to disable, and the system alerts are only on the output- you can choose if they go to internal or interface, or disable them. Take a look in system preferences, it's intuitive.

It is a good idea to install max RAM, and if it's a G4 you should probably put in a 7200 rpm drive, although you can get way with it if it's not too full (I did for years, doing 16 track recording with a 5400 rpm drive). An external drive plus interface will tax the bus on a G4 enough to cause glitches or non functionality.

The machien has 2gig, and only going to be playing a few tracks - not whole stems/songs and will be mixing loops over the top separately and probably having 1 soft synth running... so very light use :) - not audio recording or anything... probably an EQ and filter on master channel... so that's 3 plugins :)

    Hi,
Cocktail is a good app for OX conditioning - I think it costs around €30 or so ,might be trial period worth getting.

Looks like cocktail is just a bunch of scripts with a nice GUI. Nice and handy, but nothing you couldn't do from reading the manual. Plus it's not really what the OP asked- it doesn't set it up for audio (I think we're agreed that's not necessary, it's already fine as is) nor does it do "conditioning", just routine maintenance stuff.

Cheers for the help, looks like I might have to nudge up to Macbook pro for the intel chipset and now another mac might also be arriving... a G5... looks like i'm going to have to learn this stuff fast.

    A small question.

With 'time machine', could i keep an image off the computer on a usb drive and lets say get a another matching computer and duplicate the install i had before (if a machine got stolen out gigging)?

    You can indeed.
