Do you have a link to the original? Where to submit "comments and ideas"?

The original is an email to me from Dave Timpson, Digital Production Coordinator, RTÉ Radio. I can't publish it in full, but what I did post is what Dave Timpson wanted.

    If you look here http://www.techtir.ie/forums/rte-want-hybrid-mobile-app
you see Dave Timpson, Digital Production Coordinator, RTÉ Radio has posted a clarification and he will get automatic notifications of comments on Techtír.

I didn't want to say where the info came from unless that was OK too :) Obviously you have to log in to post. Otherwise your eyes would bleed with what spam bots attempt to post. If on gmail, get spam folder for activation email. Ironic since 90% of spammers use gmail accounts.

Surely this is all dependent on the phone manufacturers enabling the FM radio chip in an o/s upgrade?

I doubt if Apple are waiting with baited breath for what a broadcaster in a small European country want to do with a currently disabled chip.

According to RTE, 60% of phones have a working FM radio. Not all are smartphones. Some are feature phones.

The iPhone is leveling off growth at about 15% of Smart phones.

Hybrid Broadcast & IP solutions are the future. There are various solutions that vary in clunkyness.

For example one 3rd party Skype phone addon doesn't use VOIP or even need a Smart phone. It's a Java app that uses GPRS and then makes a regular 3G voice phone call to a real phone number that has a Skype network Interface server. This is how 3's "Skype Phones" work and it's much better quality and more reliable than trying to do actual VOIP over 3G.

There may be many un-obvious methods of how to achieve what RTE want. The Skype Phone from 3 (also available as 3rd party application for ANY phone with Java, no data plan or VOIP needed) is just an example.
