    Likely, unlikely, no bloody clue?

PLEASE NOTE: I am asking what you think they will do, not what you think they should do

Well if they dont extend it they'd be bloody stupid. Revenues are up on the back of it this year , jobs have been saved and lower Co2 cars are replacing older ones .

They've already said that the scheme -as of now - is not being extended but my take on that is that they are just forcing people to spend their money this year so as to boost revenue coffers. My guess is that they'll extend it in some shape or form for next year.

it's the question on alot of peoples lips @ the moment, and it's some gamble to take if you have a 1992 Nissan Sunny that you can get € 5,000 grand now against New car and Come January Scrappage is maybe gone!!!!

i learned in this game never assume and take Gambles on anything, also i would keep one eye on the Road Tax in the Budget!!!! They could cancel Scrappage and change the Road Tax system!!!! you just dont know!!! With the changes that have been made over the past years, i.e, July CO2, WAT A DISASTER...................

Motor dealers had their break. There's other industries suffering in Ireland. The distributors have managed to match the government scrappage scheme. They can still keep their own scrappage schemes if they want to but the government don't need to fund another year of it.

But there in lines the point , it made them more money, not cost them money. If the get rid of it next year then Revenues will be down and not up. Until natural growth returns to the market then an un-subsidised car industry will infact contribute less rather than more to the tax take.

The Scrappage scheme is only good for the people that can afford a new car & i would say they have all bought now.So no point in carrying it on. The banks wont give you the money to buy a new car if your a builder or have any other shakey Job.

You'd be suprised how many people out there can afford a new car ;)

And on the banks and the builders. A) Banks are lending money again but not to builders but thats because B) we all saw what happened the last time round when builders were givin money :p

Well if the scrappage scheme is paying for itself it's a no brainer to keep it going. I don't see natural growth returning for a good many years if ever. The banks will never lend like they did before and many folks will be strangled with their mortgages for their working lives.

The Co2 issue is a false economy, much less Co2 generated in keeping the older car on the road than making a new one

    I don't blame them.

Ed, people who want a new car will get one if a scrappage scheme exists or not. It wasn't the government that made it a successful scheme it was Renault's initiative to match the scheme and then other distributors followed them to get sales. The €1500 off a new car didn't push sales, the €3,000 - €5,000 off a new car is what pushed sales. Most of this was distributor/dealer discounts. Because someone with 10k to spend on car can now look well beyond 3/4yr old cars.
