iPhone 4 Died??

Last night my Iphone 4 died, it powered off and wouldn't come back on. I assumed it had run out of power, but it was fully charged the night before. So I plugged her in and on screen it was asking me to plug into itunes.

I left it charge over night just in case it was a power issue. Throughout the night the phone kept restarting, the apple logo would show up and then it would ask for iTunes again.

This morning I plugged it into my MBP where it was set up and authorised. Again, the phone started turning on and off but this time only the apple logo displays. The logo shows up for a few seconds and the screen powers off.

The iphone was only about a week old. It was fully up to date and there were no firmware modifications or jail breaks. There were a number of apps installed but all fairly standard stuff from the apple store. Before the phone died I was using the phone normally and was in an app.

In terms of next steps im not sure what to do. Should I bring it back to Carphone warehouse where I purchased? I heard you can drop into some of the apple resellers like compub where there have apple staff that help with these kind of issue. Id really apreciate some advice as I've had problems returning phones for repair to Carphone warehouse in the past. The only reason I purchased it with them is because they were the only shop around with any iPhone 4's available.

    Advice would be welcomed..

Have you tried getting itunes to "restore" the iPhone back to the way you got it and then restoring the last known good backup?

It sounds very strange and I've had some oddities with mine but nothing like this and it's been rock solid since I install IOS 4.1 on it.

There was a news article a few months ago about this item. Bring it back to your store where you purchased it and demand a replacement or refund. If they refuse tell them you'll be going to the small claims court (always works) Look at the www.CAI.ie website before you go to the store and back yourself up with info!

My cousin had the same problem a few months ago. We actually had to go through small claims, but since the store never replied to the courts we were awarded the money back and can keep the phone!

It doesn't make it as far as itunes, the screen powers off after the apple logo displays. When I open up iTunes it doesn't seem to recognise the phone. So I cant get as far as a restore.

Lee, in terms of a replacement.. Almost all of the shops in Dublin are out of stock of iPhones so Id be waiting a while for a straight replacement.

If an item is faulty whether it's in warranty or not, You are entitled to refund, replacement or repair.

You might want to clarify that before people go running off with 10 year old Nokias demanding replacements........

That's true! But in dealing with CAI and Courts system for a long time now, I have seen nothing to indicate that there's a limitation on time for faults. Of course, there's always going to be exceptions and I wouldn't believe in going with a 10 year old mobile as you've said but a four/five year old TV, camera etc would be fine to me as they are supposed to last a long time if not a lifetime.

CAi.ie are very good for answering queries like this, so anyone should contact them if they have any queries of same.

I know the Iphone has been having problems and so the stores are generally very good with replacing or refunding.

ring apple, explain it to them. They'll organise a replacement. Generally they pickup the old one, then when they receive it, they send out a new one, takes about 4 working days. However there is another option. They send out the new one ad pickup the old one after. There is a €35 fee for this, but if you push them they generally waive it. However one thing they won't waive is a hold on a credit card. My unlocked 32GB would have resulted in a €569 hold or there abouts.

Have you restored it from DFU mode?

Mine did this too, just DFU and Restore.

Hi i had this problem with my new ipod, went to the apple website and put in the serial number it told me that it was covered by warranty.
I then went to an approved repair person (they lost all the ones for ireland on the apple website) they took the ipod no charge and sent it off, my new one was there within a couple of days. :)

    Good luck

try Soft reset... Hold Home and Power button at same time until screen goes back and Apple logo appears...
