Resigning / questions re new job

    Hi,
I will be resigning from my current job within the next couple of weeks, I have a new job lined up. When I resign I know I will be asked where I am moving to - but I do not want to say. The new company is not a competitor but the current company would have some dealings with them. There are no ethical issues/trade secret issues, it's just that they cooperate in some areas.

But I do not want to let my current company know that I am moving there - I think they will be unhappy with me leaving them, and since they have contacts in the new company, I am afraid of what they could say to them, also it is possible that me moving to the new company could cause less business to come their way from the old company in future.

In short I would like a tactful way of not answering the question of where I am moving to. Any ideas?

    Thanks

Just don't tell them if you don't want to. Say "I'd rather not say as we are still finalizing contract details." or something like that.

If you refuse to say they may put escort you off the premises and give you gardening leave

Some people would welcome this and some won't.

Can't you just lie and say you're going somewhere else?

Why become a liar at this stage...

Hold you head up and do as 3DataModem says, "I'd rather not say as we are still finalizing contract details"

How is that not a lie also? :)

I'd just tell them something vague, it's not like it's their business anyway.

Some contracts state that you cannot work for a competitor or other company that your current company has dealings with for a certain period of time (my contract says this anyway...)

So If I were to leave I think it would be tricky to refuse to say who I was moving to as I have contractual obligations not to work for certain firms. Guess depends on your contract whether they have a right to know where you are moving to....

Cheers - that's what I was thinking too!
I honestly think you should just make up a story about a different company.
By the time they figure it out you'll be long gone!

Ireland is a very small village. Chances are one of your former colleagues will have some dealings with you at the new job, sooner or later. Or will be married to someone who works there. Or something.

Don't lie. Just say "I'd rather not say" - but as someone said, expect to be escorted from the building rather sharpishly.
