have you called the local PD, they can trace the number or find the owner if the phone is registered, or maybe he s not that thick and waiting for you to call and offer a reward,

He must be sick with worry given the way these types treat any dogs that are unlucky enough to fall into their hands. If it was me I'd be sussing out every traveller camp I know!!

I would do exactly as above but I would also keep the Gardai informed of all contact and if you were so lucky to have the dog handed over for cash they might have something to nail the f'ers.

I hate to say it but regardless your going to end up paying to get the dog back, with that in mind and as posted these are options that my friend had to do.

Ring as stated above and ask if he saw the dog
Add in local paper and shop windows
Call to the site and again ask if they say a springer in there travels

He got the dog back and gave them €100, it sickened him to pay it but what choice.

The Gardai are powerless, and if you were to get uppity, youd be in trouble.

Folks, regardless of personal feelings on this one, next person to suggest physical violence as a solution gets a week off.

Forget tracing phone numbers here.It isnt that easy and unless it is a murder or missing kid,or somthing like that, even the Gardai have been blocked by phone companies from accessing phone numbers.Data protection act 2000,a double edged sword.

Better option..Do a sting on them.
This will require a sympathetic local Garda or plain clothes man.Better even if you can get a Ban Garda to do this.Do the usual reward for dog thing, even ring the mobile number that they gave you, tell them there is a large reward going for the dog .500 Euros is good bait, and like everything you need good bait to catch the appropriate critter. If they make contact, have your Garda along for the meet, but he/she must be in plain clothes with his/her Warrent card.

See if it is your dog first, and if it is it will come immediately to you, take the dog, positively identify it orally to the "friend" and give the Travellers 50 quid for their troubles, if you want to...they no doubt will get stroppy,at this point your "friend " introduces himself as to who he/she is by producing his/her warrent card, and suggests that they might want to consider desisting from this carry on,unless they would like a visit to the local halting site and charge of handling stolen property??As they were positively identified by being in the posters fathers yard casing the place, while looking for scrap??

This carry on of dog napping has been going on way too much and too long .It would be an exelent coup for the Gaurds if this one was nipped in this fashion in the bud.It would make certain groups in Irish society think twice about wether they are going to get cash or get their collars felt.
Bad enough it is happening to us,but imagine it happens to some senior citizen whose dog might be their only companion and friend??Having to fork out money to these scum that they can ill afford???:mad:

This carry on really boils my blood. My Lab disappeared from the house when she was 8 months old. I thought she had managed to get out and I spent two days walking the roads and drains in case she had got clipped by a car. Put up posters in a load of places, ad on radio and asked around.
I was losing hope of finding her but after a week I got a call from a guy
that had seen the poster and he told me the house number to go to to find her. I thought of asking Gardai to come along but couldn't stop myself from going over straight away.
By no means tarring all with one brush, but it was Eastern europeans that had her. He tried to claim she was his even though she was all over me. As soon as I mentioned microchip and Gardai he said take her away.
I should have reported him anyway but I was just over the moon to have her back. You can't be careful enough with anything these days.
Make every effort to find your springer and don't give up... Best of luck

to be honest lads a micro chip is the best way to stop this, my uncle had two dogs taken last year by too polish lads, he had them chipped, he got one back after two weeks and to other after 6 weeks all down to the chips

My pointer x beagle took off on me last sunday while duck shooting couldn't find her anywhere. Was up to 12 o clock looking for and out again at first light monday morning. Finally found her at 2 in the afternoon near where i let her off from. Talk about relief. Any way i looked into micro chipping at my local vets yesterday after reading this post and he said it was €22. I'll be getting that done on Saturday morning. Best of luck finding your dog it would drive me crazy wondering what happened to her.

I hope you get your dog back.

The only way to cut down on dog theft is to increase the use of microchipping. Anyone buying a dog from a shady source could then be done for receiving stolen property if it was found to be chipped. At 20-30 quid there is no excuse. Some dogs are ‘borrowed’ for stud reasons and then just dumped.

Talk about tracing mobile calls, laying traps, etc., is both nonsense and a waste of time. Two well-known individuals, brothers, from ....errr.....the Mid West patrolled my area over a couple of days last year and were pulled 2-3 times by the Gardai. Back home the following weekend they got very obstreperous Saturday night in the place they are allowed drink and were cautioned by the Guards. That night seven houses – all holiday homes – in this area were burgled. What most likely was a relatives van (same colour, same markings but not sufficient detail for Court) was caught on local cctv but nothing could be done.
    Go Figure.
    Get microchips.

    Pedro

A Rothy boxer cross  . But she gets on great with the pointer and will protect the misses till the last. Dont really care watch she is once she keeps unwanted people out. Sh*ts herself when she hear's a firework or see's the gun though! :D

Endasmail nearly felt the brunt of her one day as did landkeeper :p:p

So you have a "Roxer" as well Elius:D
Amazing, mine suffers the same scare of firecrackers and gunshot.Just even to see the gun he goes and hides .
But anyone darkens the door he goes mental, and will literally climb fences to get at strangers on his patch.:D

Just a question here folks. In actuality I am puzzled as to why anyone would bother nicking a pedigree dog for breeding or selling? If they are genuine, you are going to have to produce the IKC papers and bloodline which is registerd. So you cant breed without the paperwork, and you cant sell it to anyone ,even if stolen to order as they cant breed it either or register the pups? Not to mind with chipping, its going to show up as either nicked or a fake sell???So how are they getting around this??Has somone figured out how to remove the chip and forge the paperwork???
PM if you dont want to discuss openly.Only thing I can think off is ramsom for the dog??:confused:

I do know of certain unscrupulous people that hold onto and trade IKC papers of dead dogs so that they can breed any mutt but supply it with pedigree papers.

If you have any friends in Kerry get them to check the sites there. It's worth a try. Some of your neighbours might be in the Guards there, if so ask them for their help!

Our bull terrier sleeps in the same kennel as the pointer. So good luck to anyone that try's the trick on us. I would definitely be in favour of microchipping. All the dogs I have are microchipped and it's a nice security to have.

guards may have a good idea, so they may know the nearest halting sights that you could have a look at, you may not be the only people who had a pet or something stolen today by this individual, and the police may know more

Some f**ker robbed my uncles dog last day of october afew years ago, happens to alot of people round this area. Some are lucky enough and the dog ends up getting dropped back near the scene of the crime and returning home, others are never seen again. Sounds to me like some f**ker took yer dog away for afew days shooting and dropped her back when he was finished. If it was a male I'd say maybe it wandered!
