Don't see a huge need for a patent, and with the size and price point they'd gotten the PS2 down to already I can't imagine them making much on this unless they put a stupid mark-up on it.

Wouldn't making this hurt the sales of their HD Collections?

Not really, most people want the remade HD and trophies. The ps2 is still available to be bought but it's not like they're still making these games, and this will allow those less popular games to be played with some up-scaling.

Here is the translations for those that want it.

You'll notice that the next gen console is the same as the display, earlier in the year Sony patented the ability to use ps2 game and devices on a TV (With cell).

this wouldn't be a usb add-on as the PS3's USB ports are only capable of transferring around 35 megabytes per second at their maximum throughput level, no way is this fast enough to host an entire console. The fact that the hub appears to be handling Ethernet traffic suggests that the solution to the bandwidth issue is to use the gigabit network port on the rear of the unit.

why is there a big deal over this really ? , like a good majority of people who own a ps3 own a ps2 plus i can understand people wanting to play the old games but i fail to see the point in paying for a 400 euro next gen console to play games that are old .. IMO

Ya I'd have to agree. It's not like when the PS3 came out first and the titles were rubbish. There are a lot of quality games on PS3 now and are not all that dear. I can understand HD remakes because as stated above peopke do like to play old games in HD and love trophies. Having said that, it's best to move forward and play some of this gen's classics

My PS2 still gets far more play than any of my other consoles, have a massive library of excellent games I still haven't touched.

I think Sony are just covering their asses so a third party doesn't come up with this idea and make money from it really. I doubt it will ever happen.
